McCormick Gourmet Hot Madras Curry Powder. Have tried many other off the shelf brands of Curry, some good, some not so good. McCormick Gourmet Hot Madras Curry Powder is very robust and you can smell and taste the difference. McCormick writes this curry is “inspired by the Madras region of India, this aromatic blend of spices balances heat with intense flavor”. McCormick Gourmet Hot Madras Curry Powder can be used on all kinds of foods to add flavor. Sprinkled onto egg whites, it adds a burst of flavor that is delicious. Also, add to other dishes such as “beef, chicken, lamb, shrimp and vegetables in making curries. Also use in fruit compotes, stuffed eggs and chicken and shrimp salad”. Ingredients that make up this curry are “Fenugreek, Coriander, Cumin, Turmeric, Red Pepper, Garlic, and Sulfiting Agents”.
Lorna Fairweather, 1000 Fanfare Way, Apt. 4104, Alpharetta, Ga. 30009, LFairw@yahoo.com PRODUCT NAME: McCORMICK GOUMET COLLECTION BLEND, HOT MADAS CURRY POWDER PACKAGING: GLASS BOTTLE FONT: THE FONT IS WHITE, WHICH IS HARD TO READ, AGAINST THE COLOR OF THE CURRY IN THE BOTTLE. COLOR OF PRODUCT: MUSTARD. NET WT: 1.75OZ. / 49mg EXPIRATION DATES: HAS AN EXPIRATION DATE STAMPED. AROMA: VERY HIGH INTENSITY OF CURRY SMELL. COLOR TASTE: THE TASTE OF STRONG CURRY. SPICES: FENUGREEK, CORIANDER, CUMIN, TUMERIC, RED PEPPER, GARLIC AND SUFITING AGENTS, WHICH ARE PRESERVITIVES, POTASSIUM SODIUM, USUALLY USED IN BAKING PRODUCT, WINE AND BEER PROCESSING. SUMMARY: THIS IS A GREAT CURRY PRODUCT. IT HAS A VERY STRONG CURRY AROMA AND TASTE. THIS PRODUCT USED IS DERIVES FROM THE MADRAS REGION OF INDIA. IT IS A BALANCE OF SPICES OF HEAT AND INTENSED FLAVOR. THIS A MILD BLEND OF PEPPER. WHEN TASTED DRY, THE PEPPER TASTE IS EXTREMELY LOW. WHEN USED IN COOKING THE PEPPER TASTE IS STILL VERY LOW. IT IS NOT UNCOMFORTABLE TO THE TASTE BUDS. I ENYOY A MORE INTENSED PEPPER FLAVOR, MAY BE IN THE FUTURE, THE PRODUCT COULD BE MADE FROM A LOW TO HIGH SPICY FLAVORS, OFFERING A VERY SPICY BATCH FOR PEPPER LOVERS.
I've always used curry powder.min my cooking. I never tried the McCormick hot madras curry powder brand until now. I use it just like I use any other seasoning. I don't use a lot because I don't want a strong yellow color or the good to be too spicy. Sometimes I add it to stews like chicken, beef, turkey, and pork. I even use it in rice and beans for a spicy flavor and coloring. I'm from the Caribbean and I love cooking and eating ethnic foods. I really enjoy cooking with this seasoning and I plan on using it in my cooking. I would definitely recommend this seasoning because it's great!
I love to experiment with seasonings, but this was the first time I had tried curry powder. I always assumed it was kind of a specific seasoning (curry chicken, etc), but it turns out that its going to be quite a versatile and much used seasoning for me. I had a fresh caught trout that I sprinkled the curry powder on and in, put some butter in it and threw it in the oven. It was delicious! I am looking forward to trying some of the "traditional" curry powder recipes, as well.
Up-front warning: This is a completely biased review because I like spicy curry. I've used the McCormick Madras blend in the past, and it's great. I don't think it's excessively spicy, unless you are extremely adverse to anything spicier than black pepper. My favorite recipe using the Madras curry blend is coconut curry chicken. Simmer some boneless chicken breasts in coconut milk, and dump in a ton of the curry. Well, there's other ingredients in chicken recipe, but I won't type it out here. It would also go well with lamb, vegetables, and rice. If you've got a recipe that calls for curry, this is the blend to use!
When the McCormick Hot Madras Curry powder arrived it inspired me. So I made a very nice curry chicken with coconut and peanuts. I like my curry hot and this curry fits the bill!~ It was not overpowering, but did give my curry the "bite" that I like. I also love the smell of curry cooking! Just wonderful. Made my favorite curry recipe even better. If you like curry, give this one a try. It's very flavorful. I really liked it, I think you will too!
I love curry and use it quite often in the seasoning of my food, I have tried many brands over the years and some were very lacking in taste and others were harsh tasting and I always had to add peppers to get the spice, this however is different I didn't have to add anything extra, love it and will buy it again
My husband and I learned to love curry while we lived in Germany for 4 years. In Germany they serve french fries with ketchup smothered in curry powder. Since then we mix up curry powder and ketchup and use it on brats, fries, etc. This curry powder is so good. My first thought was how it had a pure, high quality taste. It has a strong curry flavor with a small amount of heat. I also picked up a tiny bit of a smoky taste that I haven't found in others. I will be buying this one from now on.
I chose and received the McCormick Gourmet Herbs Whole Cloves, McCormick Gourmet Dry Blends / Seasonings Hot Madras Curry Powder, and the McCormick Gourmet Herbs Whole Jamaica Allspice to try for free in their Product Review Program; as I enjoy cooking and Jamaican dishes is one of my favorites. This combination (along with a few other ingredients) worked well together in a curried chicken dish (with rice and peas) that I recently made. The Curry Powder itself has a deep, rich flavor. I like foods that are a little spicy; but not over the top hot. So the heat it packs is perfect. The Whole Cloves and Allspice adds another level of essence that's hard to match. I'll definitely have these products on y grocery list next time I'm doing Jamaican / curry!
The McCormick Hot Madras Curry Powder is definitely curry, and has a nice strong spicy flavor. However, if you are looking for truly hot curry powder, this is not the product for you. However, curry itself has a nice flavor, and this one is strong, but not particularly hot. The package arrived sealed, but the interior safety seal had partially unsealed, so that the product was a bit moist and does not shake properly, which for me wasn't a big deal because I use a lot of curry powder and generally sprinkle it out heavily with a teaspoon. The color is a nice, rich orangey/yellow, and the powder has a wonderful fragrance out of the jar - it's just not hot! The powder is good for making different types of curries, as well as a change of spice for omelets, frittatas, and even scrambled eggs. I use it on veggies sautéed in avocado oil, and the flavor is very pleasant. It's a good product to use if you're not sure how much you like curry!
