At first stations would not come in like the tv does, but when adding a two way splitter made the difference in signal strength. What makes this even better is its like having a dual tuner, watch the tv while the pvr records. .
I connected a antenna that is in the attic and unused, and added a external hard drive for a over-the-air DVR. Also, used the HDMI to the TV for best results.
I bought one of these three years ago. It recently broke so I wanted a new one.I got the 180 PVR model but it would'nt record so I sent it back and decided to buy the 150 model again. This has worked fine so far.
After reading many reviews on Amazon and Walmart I decided to give this a try because I wanted to spend as little as possible for a device that works kind of like a VCR in the old days. It arrived 1 day early at a nearby Walmart neighborhood store. It comes in a rather small box. Setting it up was easy, like most reviewers stated. I made 2 trial recordings of TV shows (half hour each) on a flash drive at 1080p and 720p. Both worked fine. Then I set it up to record 16 episodes of a TV show (an all-day marathon). That's when the inconvenience come up - I had to repeat 16 times for selecting the channel, setting start time, end time, to confirm it, etc. It took quite a while to do that. BTW, I used an external HDD for storage. At 720p, each episode (59 min.) takes up about 3.8 GB of storage. I looked up its website; the support forum states that this device already has the latest software on it. Overall, It meets my expectation. You can't expect too much for such inexpensive device.
This is a great tuner for digital channels. There is info regarding upcoming programs and the picture is great on my new Visio smart TV. Unfortunately none of the analog channels scan in. My 55 and older neighborhood has a mix of channels, 64 analog channels, 23 digital. There is a coaxial cable connection with no cable box, no individual service. The Visio TV has NO coaxial capability. Since this tuner worked way better than the one i bought at Best Buy (4 channels all WTTW digital pbs), i am very satisfied with the result.
This product was the only option available that I could find. December 2016, I bought a new Vizio 60" E-series TV that did not have a built in TV tuner (kinda silly?) This thing does the job. It goes between your antenna and your TV and it works for how it was designed. The only issue is that it's almost 2017 and using the remote to navigate screens and set-up channels makes you feel like its the 1990s. The software may be new, but has an ancient feel to it. If you can get past that, this is a 5-star product.
For the price you can't beat this product but you need to be tech savy and not too fussy about quirky user interface. The recordings are in .mts format only; you have to manually set the time change to daylight savings, to name a couple inconvenient features. It does have good tuner sensitivity and displays (and records) beautiful uncompressed HD. I have 5 of these and if you want multiple units, buy them all at once since version changes have made recordings from older units incompatible with newer ones. This applies to internal playback only. All recordings seem to work when played on a computer/video display device.
Works well but the menu and controls are not user friendly. Recordings are saved to USB one at a time. Cannot record two stations at the same time. To delete a recording, press the EPG button. A simple "delete" button would been nice. I also added a signal amplifier.
This gadget seemed to work fine at first, then problems appeared. On some channels the tuner/converter worked fine - until recording began. Then the video on the tv got pixellated, and the recording showed medium to severe pixellation on playback. The audio in the recording was often out of synch or missing. This gadget refuses to record from one sub-channel even though the tuner/converter receives and delivers that sub-channel's signal well. When I try to record that sub-channel, using either the timer or the manual record button, the gadget flashes this message: "Unknown error - leaving". When you change channels, the gadget normally displays a box with the signal strength, the time, the program currently on, and the program scheduled next. Now instead of showing the program scheduled next, it lists whatever was broadcast one or two programs further back. The tuner/digital-to-analog converter was the last to go, but now the audio and video are out of synch on all channels. If you like pixellated recordings with mangled audio, unrecorded recordings, out-of-synch audio, and miscellanous other quirks, then this unit is for you!
I purchased the original converter box early November and, a short while after I starting using it, the record to USB function became unreliable. It would stop recording from 3 to 50 minutes after starting. Wal Marts return policy got me a replacement with no hassle. It seems the replacement is doing the same thing as the first converter box. I can still use the DTA processing to watch TV channels live on my old analog basement TV and for the price I will keep this unit for that. Other reviews I have read seem to report similar problems and apparently Mediasonic has not (and maybe will not) be working on a fix. For electronic buffs it is suggested there may be bad capacitor problems.
