Talk about what each food tastes like, whether it is crunchy, soft, etc., and which ones are favorite snacks. Count On It: Remove the food pieces one at a time from the crate, counting aloud as each is removed, and again as each is returned to the crate. As counting skills increase, count the food as it's removed, slice each with the wooden knife, then count the separate pieces as they are returned to the crate! Halves, Thirds, Fourths: Place the apple on the cutting board and cut it apart with the wooden knife. Talk about how the apple has been cut in half. What other food can be cut in half (the pepper)? Place the three bread slices together, cut them apart, and talk about thirds (three equal pieces). Do the same with the watermelon and talk about fourths!
