Our two year old son has become a big fan of trains and videos of Thomas and his friends. So when we saw that our local Wal-Mart had a small section with all of the engines that our boy knew we had to get him one. We started with the Thomas one since it comes with the main character of the video series but we quickly bought up several other engine sets as well as accessory sets like extra tracks and other structures. You can get this as a starter set to see your child's interest level before you spend any more money on trains and tracks. Our little boy couldn't get enough of it. Now we have enough track to make the most entertaining configurations where we can have all four of his engines chugging along on it at the same time. He just loves to snap together the track pieces (some really outrageous designs sometimes) to create new designs and gets a kick out of them pulling a string of cars behind them. The series they sell at Wal-Mart are the ones with the plastic tracks and battery powered (1 AA battery) unlike the ones they have at other toy chains (you know which one) that have wooden tracks with non-mechanized trains that cost a whole lot more. Personally I much prefer these for ease of use, low cost, and my boy loves to watch them go. After three months of having these our little boy still plays with them at least every other day. I highly recommend getting this and others in the Thomas series if you have any little train engineers in your family.
