The tool is well made. The left crank arm came off easy. The right side needed a little persuading with penetrating oil and a small hammer. The right side crank arm did not seem to be threaded properly, the threads were cut shallow on one side of the hole and deeper on the other side. The threads were trashed when I finally got the arm with gears off.The bike was still under warranty. The 'Next" Bike company had sent me all new parts at no charge. The after market parts were better made than the original one's.The tool threads held up.I can use it again someday. The reason I bought the tool was because my sons bike would "clunk" in the same spot when pedalled.I thought the bearing cage or something down there was defective. The only thing I found was some small rocks and sand.I dont know how the BB size rocks got in there, maybe riding through mud puddles??
A couple of Christmases ago, we got a Big Green Machine for our Grand Daughter. She had been riding it and failed to tell us that a peddle was loosening and it stripped the thread. I had to order a new crank and peddle. They didn't tell me I needed a special tool the remove the crank. I did some research on how to remove the crank then I ordered the Crank Set Remover from Walmart. It easily removed the crank in less than 2 minutes.
We're a family of 4 on a budget, so maintenance is done at home. Needed to remove a crank set to perform some bottom bracket repairs, didn't have a crank remover. Found a few at various bike shops, but were a little too high priced. Remembered seeing one here online. Ordered one, arrived quickly, and put right to work. Works as it should, no bells and whistles, doesn't come with a lofty name brand such as Park Tools, but gets the job done as it should.
Yes, this tool does work with some practice. It is tricky and the tool could be designed a little different so that you could operate it with a ratchet and socket instead of a 14mm hex key or a 14mm reg. wrench. I've used it a few times and it doesn't seem to bad yet, BUT IF you plan on using it frequently, spend the money on a quality one at a bike shop!
I wanted to remove the crankset and it worked on the crank side. When I used it to remove the crank arm, the stem broke. I returned it at a local WalMart store. I need to buy another one but the quality kind of prevent me from getting the same one. I have no option here and need to get it elsewhere. I had no idea as this is supposed to be a tool that lasts but it cracked before completing the job.
This is a real neat tool. I was able to figure out how to use it and it worked fine for the first crank. When trying to pull the second crank the tool broke in half. Assuming it would have stayed in one piece it would have been a real asset to me and would have been totally pleased. I used an adjustable wrench to tighten the tool at the chrome nut, possibly it put too much torque on the unit.
I read earlier reviews. Some were good and some were bad. For the price I took a chance. Unfortunatley I ended up in the second group. The puller broke with very little force applied. It did break at the weakest point so that was not a surprise. It would have not been difficult to design and construct this device correctly. So I would definitely not recommend its purchase.
It broke the first time I used it. Save your money and get the Park Tool crank remover.
Got this item to try and fix my daughters bike but it snapped in two on the first use.
I was so happy when I found this tool for about one third of the cost at the local bike store. I think it was defective as it came apart where there should have been a permanent weld.
