[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love the Helmsman Spar Urethane product. It is my go-to top coat when I need excellent weather protection for outdoor wood furniture. Applies easily, dries fast, and is easy to re-apply for additional coats. Bottom line is that the finished product is always well-protected from the elements, and looks amazing.
Great applied 2 coats of semi on benches outside. Very solid
I used spar urethane glossy finish for an oak table top. I used Minwax stain prep, Minwax stain to start with, sanding when directed by instructions. Long smooth stroked with a 2" brush does the job nicely. I think it looks great! I hope it holds up well to regular use. :)
I have been a professional woodworker for 25 years and I can tell you that every product that Minwax makes is beyond excellent. Most of the furniture that I restore is from the 1850's and no one can tell the difference from 1850 stain to today's stain. I will not use anything else. Woodchuck woodworks
I am very pleased with this product. The attached photo is my year old outdoor patio table that I finished with 3 coats of this water based urethane. Love it. Here is are some photos during a rain store tonight.
My hobbies include making rustic art woodworking projects. The material;s are often reclaimed lumber of which most are designed to endure the midwest's outdoor elements. I am often asked for product referrals and do not hesitate to make the reference of Marine Spar Varnish being used to product teak and mahogany wood on salt water craft. If it can endure these elements, think what it will do in one's backyard.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Finally, a coating that my wife likes. I prefer my wood having a high shine to it and my wife prefers a dull look. I wanted to try a new and different product that I've never used before. I'm glad I tried this one out. It gives the trim a little bit of a shine, but it doesn't make it too shiny. I'm very impressed with the middle of the road shine and protectant. This is definitely my new go to protectant.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We refinished our front door about 18 months ago using Minwax stain and Helmsman finish. Peeled within the first year. Not too happy!
I bought and painted my door a year ago using this product and following the directions to the letter. Th paint has now peeled off like a film and ruined my custom wood door. I am extremely frustrated by the product and will never use anything from this manufacturer again.
This product was not even subpar. Our contractor applied the product as specified. The product started peeling after only one year. Very very not cool. I am now responsible for refinishing the door for their poor product performance. Replacement product is not an option as I am not sure we wont be in the same situation next year. AVOID!
