[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm really happy with my Minwax Helmsman teak oil. It went on so easy and really makes a difference in how my outdoor wood furniture looks. I have to admit that it was looking pretty bad, but now it's got a fresh look and is protected from the elements. I should have used this product so much sooner!
It's important to know what you expect of your results. All finishes are not the same. Even finishes that are called the same thing may not always work well together. Two different brands of tung oil may not work together or two different brands of teak oil may not work together. Always do a test before using any finish you plan to use especially on a cherished or valuable piece. You should also test your entire process! If you plan to stain, oil, and wax then test that entire process before undertaking your project. I used Minwax Helmsman Teak Oil to refinish a 1916 rifle stock. I was NOT trying to make a furniture quality piece but rather a functional rifle stock that would hold up outdoors in bad weather. I also wanted to preserve the nicks and dings the rifle had acquired throughout it's life. I sanded and cleaned the stock, applied lemon oil, 2 coats of Teak Oil , then waxed. I'm extremely pleased with the results. I'm able to easily see the grain, wear and character of this rifle.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought an old rustic patio set for the fire pit. I decided to spruce it up a bit so I applied Minwax Teak Oil. This is what it looked like after the first coat, I will add another coat for more protection.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love Helmsman Teak Oil by Minwax. I have outdoor patio furniture that suggests you use teak oil to keep it in top shape. This teak oil is easy to apply, and a little goes a long way. I used a rag and applied it in circular motion until the entire table was covered. I let it dry overnight in the garage. It dried smooth and was not tacky. This teak oil really brought out the beauty in the wood and gave it a nice shine. I would definitely recommend this oil to make/keep your wood furniture new and protect it from the elements.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Minwax Helmsman Teak Oil will help add years of use to my outdoor furniture. I was able to get my furniture ready for the winter season with one piece that stays out in the yard due to its size with the assistance of this Teak Oil.
My Dad and I , did a lot of restore works, of our old Wood hand Crafts . Used Teak Oil and Tung Oil . One is a 40 yr old Spice Rack , which my Mom really used , to overflow ! Kitchen knife block- 20 yrs and old Motorcycle Model !
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Minwax brand teak oil has really brought life back to our outdoor swing. I'm glad to know there is a trustworthy product out there that refreshes the color of the wood and restores it back to its natural beauty. It was very easy to apply, and very reasonably priced.
This garbage ruined my teak table! It is extremely misleading to call this product "Teak Oil". It left a glossy, hard, hideous finish that looks like someone slapped a cheap polyurethane on it. The photo doesn't even do justice to how awful the finish is. It looks like it is soaking wet a week later! Now I have to figure out the best way to get this off my very expensive 10 foot teak table without causing even more harm to it. Shame on Minwax for marketing this junk as "Teak Oil'!
DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! It just ruined my 25 year old rockers! I always used Watkins Teak Oil and applied it every other year on those rockers, but the local home improvement store only had Minwax brand. I assumed teak oil was all the same. Horrible what it just did to those rockers! I am so upset about this. It was so tacky to work with, in the shade on a 65 degree day too. It kept surfacing residue no matter how much I tried to wipe it off! I have no idea how to fix the raised, sticky finish. Please do not tell me I applied it incorrectly, I've done this at least 10 times over past 25 years on those rockers. Thank you for ruining my sentimental furniture
I, too, assumed that this was teak oil. After over 100 hours of lovingly building a custom walnut vanity, I applied this product as directed and destroyed it. It absorbed unevenly and on the denser grain, left a tacky glossy sheen. My only option now is to sand it all off and try again, but my desired natural oiled finish is gone for good. Thanks to Minwax, I have many hours of painstaking labor ahead trying to salvage this piece. Minwax should take this product off the market, or be honest about what it is - a varnish, and not a very good one at that.
