I am almost 300 pounds, and I will wear these shoes out quickly walking up and down the steps where I go to school. I paid a little less than $12 delivered to my door. For that price I can afford to wear these out and get a new pair. I'm not a "name Brand" shopper. I'm a value shopper.
I have a wide foot and have trouble finding comfortable sneakers. This sneaker is awesome. EXTREMELY comfortable, looks great (have been stopped to ask where I got them) and the price cannot be beat. I bought an extra pair because they are so perfect. Thanks to Wal Mart for making these so good looking and so comfortable and so affordable.
A very nice pair of shoes, comfortable, and easy on the wallet. Finally, after all these years a tennis shoe that makes sense, a shoe that I will continue to re-purchase over and over again.
for the price. The shoe lacing is kind of odd, but if you need a cheap pair of sneakers fast, this is the way to go. I get about 6 months of wear out of a pair like this, wearing them almost every day. After that, they still have a couple months of life left in them as barn shoes. While they sure aren't Nikes or the like, can't beat it for the price.
i bought two pair originally before xmas and was pleased because of the wide width and the price value. i noticed too the heel was collaspsing on both of them. i bought my 3rd pair yesterday and was surprised to see the sole tread was different on the newest pair. upon further investigation the insides are made different too. looks like the issue of the heel was addressed by whoever makes them. has a much more sturdier inside now.
I needed a pair of tennis shoes just to walk around in. For the price, I knew that all they would be good for just going to the store. I think they would fall apart quickly if you used them as running shoes. For 10 bucks, you can't beat the price. I use them every day. I have much more expensive shoes to run and work out in. So if you want a pair of comfortable shoes at a cheap price they are well worth it.
When lived in Korea I bought a couple of pairs while visiting the US. They lasted very well while walking all over Korea. I bought some more on my next trip to the US and the heals collapsed. At some point they must have changed the rubber they used or something. One of the other reviewers said he thought they had fixed the heals. If they've fixed the problem then I would pay more for the shoes.
I was happy with a previous low priced athletic shoes form WM that lasted nearly three years. With this Starter shoe I had similar problems to the other reviewers with the collapse of the inside heel cushion. I put an insert in to cover the depression in the heel and was able to continue to use the shoes for several months. The uppers then began to separate along the instep stitching Now after 6-8 months the uppers are separating from the soles. Needless to say these shoe have been a disappointment even at $12.
I bought a pair of these shoes shortly before the name change from "Athletic Works" to "Starter" as it's now known. Paid $25 instead of the $12 they are now. The shoes felt great for the first week, then shortly afterwards, the cushioning effect in the heel was fading. By the end of 2 weeks, there was a whistling sound on every step as i brought my foot down. Another 2 weeks passed, and the whistling noise went away, but there was a new sensation like I was walking on the business end of a newer honeycomb style potato masher. I take the shoe off, and the part of the heel that would normally support the foot, was sinking in. Tried to ignore it and just kept using the shoes (no strenuous activity, just normal daily walking). About a month later, the rubber above the tread is tearing away from the fake leather by the inside center as well as the back of the shoe. I did give a good rating for fit and style, because when the shoes were brand new, in the store, they did feel great, and I do believe these to be good looking shoes. They just are made to such a poor quality standard I will definately not buy them again. (For verification purposes: Athletic Works UPC # 681131086035 Item NO. 2562075) For what it's worth, the (used to be slightly less expensive at $10), Starter - formerly Athletic Works - Silver Series velcro shoes are a better shoe for the money, usually lasting me at least a year before the tread wears out.
Delivering food and newspapers, I've begun to wear out shoes that have a soft or thin sole. These had a hard thick sole so I thought they'd be ok even though I was suspicious of the quality at the $12 price level. About a week into using them my heels began to kill and when I began poking around I noticed the foot cushion had collapsed into some voids in the sole underneath. Peeling that up revealed a "vintage ice cube tray" grid of rubber that was falling apart already. They're pretty unusable at this point unless the sole is filled in with something.
