If you have an older Orbi mess WiFi system with satellites, this new Orbi Mess system will work with your older satellite system which allows you to increase your coverage with in your home.
Finally got rid of the Spectrum router and our old Nighthawk satellite and upgraded to an Orbi Mesh system. The difference is incredible. We can now access the faster downloads and have service on our deck and in the back yard - with the ONE Orbi satellite. Perfect.
Super fast and great coverage for a two story 3500 sq ft home
I was trying to decide on either purchasing the Netgear Orbi mesh system or purchasing a lower cost, big name brand equivalent mesh system. I had also read reviews about some users reporting the Orbi system was complicated to setup. I decided on the Orbi system and could not be more satisfied with this system. I have great reception in a two-story, 2700 square foot home at all ends of my home including my attached garage. System was super simple to set up. I have not had any disruptions in my streaming devices as I had with my older system. Very solid and consistent signal. This was definitely worth the purchase price.
Once set up connectivity has been great throughout the house. Easy to hook new devices up and great ability to monitor the network through the app. Eliminated the speed throttle from my old router as well.
Setting up took almost 2 hours as the Satellite wasn't connecting and only after updating it's firmware did it finally connect. Once it did though, the speed is impressive! It's almost the same as using an ethernet cable. I have the router and one Satellite and it covers my 1,000 sq. feet home just fine.
Solid, well built. But they really should 'not' ask option to update firmware on main unit at the very start UNTIL satellite is paired to it. I had to hardwire into the satellite after finding the file and manually update it (after toubleshooting that mismatched firmware will prevent pairing.) Took maybe 2 hours longer than if it just waited for them to sync first. This would stump 95% of most users and I wasn't thrilled either. Coverage is good, my backhaul is hardwired 200' of Cat6a. Speeds of old R7000 that were bottlenecked no longer limited. Both units have nearly identical speeds.
It seems to have issues with Honeywell Lyric Round thermostats they can't connect to it! I had to bridge a old Router to connect it to!?
Hardware is only as good as its firmware. The good: The WiFi speed and range is awesome! This reached way further than my nighthawk. The bad: The firmware and software. It is really slow and the features are INCREDIBLY limited. If you want anything beyond plugging it in and that's it, I wouldn't recommend this unit. For example, a lot of features that are available on most other routers aren't available here, like specifying a source IP address when setting up port forwarding, or specifying DNS IP addresses for your LAN clients. These little missing features just kept adding up to the point where I couldn't keep it and I'm planning on returning it. It's too bad because the hardware is fantastic, but the firmware is a dog's breakfast. Honestly, I was surprised that I was able to change the starting and ending DHCP addresses after using the firmware after a while. That was a nice surprise, but with missing features like this, I can't keep this unit, which is sad because the hardware is really good. I might see if they have an orbi product that is just a wifi access point and then I can put it behind my $60 router that I can use as DHCP/firewall has more functionality than the orbi router (that's pretty sad, IMO). I don't think I could justify spending $700 on access points, so I hope they sell a product like that. What made it more frustrating is when I tried to contact support and asked if there was any workaround, all I got was "why would you want/need to do that??" I found I really had to explain myself and my setup a lot when contacting Netgear, which was frustrating. Then I basically got the answer "you cannot do that". So even if I could find workarounds for these limitations, I definitely wouldn't purchase the Netgear support plan as it's essentially not very useful. When I asked about specifying the source IP for port forwarding, I was told that I could enable remote management on the router to do it from outside the home. When I tried to clarify that wasn't what I wanted and why I required it, they said that I could create an IP reservation. I just don't think they know the product very well, and they're probably just flipping through the manual. So, if you just need a good WIFI mesh at home and don't care about tweaking things and you just want an connection, this would be perfect. If you need to change some network settings, or have some special configuration requirements (eg: running your own DNS server), you won't be able to do with this firmware.
