I bought this Nikon D5100 on Boxing Day and have been very pleased with the results that matter most - the pictures. I have been blown away by the deep, rich colors that are better looking than their natural state. The numerous modes available cover every imaginable scenario. So if you are a serious amateur like me you can take photos like a professional. ... er, almost like one. However, if you want to start the professional path this camera is definitely the one to begin with. The manual modes available are just fantastic for the price paid. Mind you, this is a better mid-range Nikon. It will keep you engaged for years. The Nikon D5100 beats its Canon T3i rival in most departments and this comprehensive comparison will make you decide in the Nikon's favor: http://www.blacks.ca/User/feeds/product/id/4724 I will recommend you buy this insanely priced prime lens - the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G that goes for $199. Just buy it without even thinking twice as it help you be a better photographer. There can be no question you will improve significantly all round. As for the 35mm images I am just dumbfounded. It is a lens (or the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 55mm f/1.8G for $220) that no Nikon owner should be without. It has a much better bokeh (than the 18-55mm kits lens). Since the D5200 and D5300 are replacing the D5100 you should get a bargain price. You need not pay more for them as the D5100 was a significant upgrade when it debuted mid-2011. You will not need those expensive upgrades. Spend the money saved on good glass and you will be so glad you did. Glass beats any upgrade hands down. So go for the D5100 and buy the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens.
Great price, buying the bundle was actually cheaper than buying just the camera and lens package. The camera is great, takes great pictures and is easy to use, the only downside is that to take any pictures that you want to zoom in on, will cost you another $150 for a decent zoom lens. This was my first DSLR and I was only used to point and shoots with a built in digital zoom. The included 18-55mm lens is good for family pictures around the house or anything else close up. Looking at the quality of a picture with a DSLR and a point and shoot is night and day, especially when you need to edit or zoom in with your computer. The DSLR pictures have so much info and it's so clear you can manipulate it just about anyway you want without losing clarity unlike a point and shoot. You can't go wrong with the quality or the price of this camera. When buying a zoom lens look at the brand SIGMA, they are inexpensive and have really good quality, also grab a couple of UV filters for your lens, they will help protect your lens in case of scratches. The lens that comes with the kit is a 52mm and the Sigma 70-300mm zoom needs a 58mm size UV filter.
Awesome bundle, great camera and lenses for beginners to experts. The free bag/case is great.
THIS CAMERA TAKES STUNNING PICTURES. THE ONLY DRAWBACK IS, IF YOU ARE USED TO TAKING PICTURES WITH A DIGITAL CAMERA BY USING THE LCD DISPLAY SCREEN, YOU WON'T LIKE THIS. YOU CAN STILL USE THE SCREEN TO TAKE THE PICTURES BUT THEY ARE NOT NEAR AS GOOD. IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO GET USED TO USING THE EYEPIECE AGAIN, BUT THE PICTURES ARE CLEAR, SHARP AND BEAUTIFUL.
I bought this D3100 camera for my wife for our anniversary this year. She was interested in either the Nikon or Canon equivalent. I went to the local Walmart and tested both models, and I found the Nikon to feel more solidly constructed than the Canon. I searched around for the best price on the D3100, and found that Walmart.com's bundle with the case, DVD and bonus photos was the best deal at $649 (most other places sold just the camera and lens for that much). I ordered the bundle online and had it at my front door in 3 business days. My wife was very pleased with the camera!
I love this camera!!! I had dreamed of being able to take better pictures for a LONG time, especially when I get great poses and the camera quality is lower! Very happy with the purchase!
This is a great camera, it takes amazing pictures, and is easy to use and figure out. This bundle package is a great deal. I am very pleased.
This camera is probably just what you need. The features you complained about; flash, shutter speed, lenses, aperature are features or products you have to learn to use. The kit lense (18-55 f5.6) is not fast enough to capture repetitive motion shots it auto mode. Try using M with a faster shutter speed and stop it down until its wide open. For the wide angle shot of the class the guide number on a camera flash is not going to be far enough to light them. This is a beginner camera. It will be fine for you when you learn how to use it. Go to Shutterbug and take some of the free tutorials. I still shoot with a D40 most of the time. I use this camera if some one wants a pic larger than a 10x15. Shoot in RAW mode also and you can change exposure in post with out losing contrast. Try Adobe Camera Raw great product. Have fun.
Awesome camera for early entry level, but you wont get 'pro quality' every time you snap a picture. you will have to take several shots to get one good one, which is fine with me. But I wanted something a little more closer to the pro range. So i returned this one with Walmarts wonderful return warranty and ordered the Canon T3i from Walmart online. the difference between the D3100 and the T3i is pretty significant, but im sure the true comparison, to be accurate, should have come from the D5100 vs the T3i. ultimately, i went into the store to feel them both out, and the only reason i really picked the T3i was due to the larger size and feel in my hands. it felt solid. pictures are fantastic. For the money though, the D3100 is a fantastic buy, once you get used to it and learn how to manage the picture taking correctly. I would definitely buy the D3100 again, i was just lucky to be able to afford the next step up.
The camera does not come with a USB Cable ( UC-E4 USB Cable). You have to buy it separately. Nikon is out if stock on the recommended cable. I had to settle for a second rate cable in order to get my pictures off the camera. Other than that I was happy with the performance of the product. The cable was not in another camera box that was opened either. I guess Nikon does not supply or ship any cables with these D3100 cameras. It became a real pain to hunt down a cable that would work with this camera. Be careful if you plan to purchase this MODEL D3100 camera. Make sure to have the store open your box and check for a USB Cable or have them get you one. NIKON LETS YOU DOWN IN THAT DEPARTMENT.
