I bought this Nikon D5100 on Boxing Day and have been very pleased with the results that matter most - the pictures. I have been blown away by the deep, rich colors that are better looking than their natural state. The numerous modes available cover every imaginable scenario. So if you are a serious amateur like me you can take photos like a professional. ... er, almost like one. However, if you want to start the professional path this camera is definitely the one to begin with. The manual modes available are just fantastic for the price paid. Mind you, this is a better mid-range Nikon. It will keep you engaged for years. The Nikon D5100 beats its Canon T3i rival in most departments and this comprehensive comparison will make you decide in the Nikon's favor: http://www.blacks.ca/User/feeds/product/id/4724 I will recommend you buy this insanely priced prime lens - the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G that goes for $199. Just buy it without even thinking twice as it help you be a better photographer. There can be no question you will improve significantly all round. As for the 35mm images I am just dumbfounded. It is a lens (or the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 55mm f/1.8G for $220) that no Nikon owner should be without. It has a much better bokeh (than the 18-55mm kits lens). Since the D5200 and D5300 are replacing the D5100 you should get a bargain price. You need not pay more for them as the D5100 was a significant upgrade when it debuted mid-2011. You will not need those expensive upgrades. Spend the money saved on good glass and you will be so glad you did. Glass beats any upgrade hands down. So go for the D5100 and buy the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens.

Great camera. Got it at a great price due to model upgrade. I only wish ALL nikon dslr's would have compatibility with older AF lenses. Moving up to a slightly more expensive model ( like the 7100) is a better option if you want lense versatility.

photos really pop, shine, however you describe it, nikons in general have excellent image quality. not very good battery life, buy another battery or two. auto focus is kind of slow and squirrely, build quality is cheap but great pics. it is 2+ years old and i paid half what they want here but go for it, it is a great camera. j
