I like it, an easy to use smoker, nice materials and well built. The welds are pretty darn good too. I bought a gasket for the door of the cabinet, that sealed it up nice and tight. I also had to put a couple of washers on the door handle that opens the smoker cabinet. That completely tightened the gap, no air infiltration or smoke/heat loss now.
I've had mine for about 20 years and this smoker produced outstanding results and a huge amount of food in a small footprint. I've examined the newer version in the stores and the gauge of steel appears to be the same and CB has incorporated a number of the mods and upgraded a number of features. Added the baffle to direct the heat below the water bowl, replaced the cheap plastic wheels with steel wheels, raised the fire grate for better airflow, replaced the water catching solid bottom shelf with expanded steel and the wood shelf with expanded steel. All are great improvements! Only one thing more is required... MORE GRATES! That smoke chamber is HUGE and the hooks and rib rack just waste a lot of space that is better utilized with grates. I have an extra set for mine and never cook with less than 6 grates, which then gives the Bandera nearly twice the capacity of the much larger Longhorn!
I am so beyond impressed on the quality & performance of the Bandera! Once you get the hang of it, you can ride it low and slow for as long as you need, or if you're not in for the long smoke, the offset fire box is great if ya just wanna quickly grill up a steak or sump'm... I don't think there's a better smoker on the market!
The amount of room to smoke different items is tremendous and the grilling area is a much added bonus. Have owned it for 2 weeks and grilled: Steaks, Burgers & Wings, while smoking a Turkey, Pork Butt, Sausage, Wings and Salmon. Has kept good heat 225+ in Maine in 20 degree weather. Perfect for weekend smoking or when you want to get out of the house on a winter day and tailgate away from the wife. You will want to purchase a gasket for the door.
This thing holds temp like a champ, heavy duty, clean up and maintenance is easy a little canola oil or whatever you prefer amd you're good. The only mod I felt was necessary was a latch on the fire box.
Just bought today June 1, 2019 and seasoned for about 2 hours before putting on my chicken wings. I had amazing results with this unit and the meat quality was delicious. I will be using tomorrow to cook a pork butt and baby backs. If you've never used this type of smoker, your missing out.
I have used it now going on 5 years and love the fact I can stack my ribs or brisket. The weak park of it is the firebox.
Got mine four years ago and still very happy with it. Shortly after getting it I installed Lava Rock fiber gaskets to the smoke chamber door and fire box lid. Silicone around bolts and where the boxes come together. Even with a cover have had to sand and repaint top of lid to firebox from rust. Now I am losing layers from the inside of the lid. Had to replace the nut from the smoke box door handle with a seize nut, kept coming loose. Made a stainless steel charcoal basket that works just great. Installed a silicone grommet for my Bluetooth Thermometer probes. First cover crystalized real quick, a year or so but the new one look almost new still, well except for the label is getting faded.
After i use it 4 times, watch the paint and the rust.
My wife gave me this smoker for my birthday. I used it for the first time last weekend. The paint on the smoke box blistered and flaked off! I now have to paint it with engine enamel paint to cover the exposed metal areas left naked by the blistering! The construction is sound, but the paint is sub-par! I would recommend the barrel smoker.
