Personnel: John P. Strohm, Steve Woods (vocals, guitar); Dennis Scoville (pedal steel guitar, fiddle); Glenn Hicks (bass); Mitchell Mustin Harris (drums); Sarah Flint, Madeline Rivera, Lisa Germano, Freda Love, Ed Ackerson, Kenny Childers, John Dehner, Tom Moeller, Vess Rhutenberg, Mike Beam, Pussyface, Inc. Recorded at John Strohm's home, Echo Park Studios, Bloomington, Indiana. The first solo release by John Strohm after nearly a decade as a recording artist, CALEDONIA contains echoes of all of the Bloomington, Indiana, native's previous incarnations, as Juliana Hatfield's foil in the massively influential Blake Babies, as leader of the Television-influenced Antenna and the more aggressive, almost metallic Velo-Deluxe, and as an adjunct member of both the Lemonheads and Polara. However, the strongest influence on CALEDONIA is that of Gram Parsons. Backed by his new group the Hello Strangers, Strohm intensifies the twangy country-rock tinge always present in his previous songs; most of CALEDONIA sounds like Strohm and crew have spent much time listening to the Byrds' SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO and the International Submarine Band's SAFE AT HOME, especially on the wistful "Tangelo" and the more aggressive "Powderkeg." Wilco and Freedy Johnston fans in particular should take note.
