I was working on a book project that had me scanning 3600 negatives that are 24 years old. I bought an Epson V600 Flatbed Scanner first that worked well for about 5 days, then started putting red and blue lines in the scans so I returned it. I spent $300 more to get this scanner and have been VERY happy with the results. Notes: If you are using a Mac the buttons on the front will not work (that's not a problem but was confusing) The full version of SilverFast 8.0 Software that comes with this scanner is INCREDIBLY capable and detailed. It allows you to set up workflows (these are a must for large projects because setting up options such as color cast corrections for film brands takes valuable time. Once the work flow is set up scanning is very quick compared to a flat bed scanner. The infrared dust scratch and defect removal is very good (as good or better that Digital ICE) If you are looking for simple software to run a scanner this probably not the scanner for you anyhow. But I did try VueScan and it is simple and capable but does not harness all that the scanner is capable of. The SilverFast software comes with video tutorials for each step and feature. It takes some time to get familiar with the software but it is worth a couple of hours to learn it because the scans are VERY good even at 2400dpi.
