It's got a carburetor. So does every other lawn and garden machine with a gas engine. You have to adjust it for best running at your altitude. It's really simple to do. The problem with this trimmer, and it's a common problem with many trimmers from many different manufacturers, is they don't tell you HOW to adjust the carburetor. This particular model is not difficult, but they've supplied the carburetor with adjustment screws that aren't really all that adjustable right out of the box. The top of the adjustment screws look like an allen head wrench. 6-sided screw head sticking up. No slot for a flat blade screw driver, which is typical and would have made this much easier to adjust. But if you're handy with power tools and you have a dremel or other rotary tool sitting around, you can make a couple easy modifications to this trimmer and get your money's worth. My local store had it marked down to $75 today. The good news is they supplied the unit with a 2-needle carburetor. (Needle or adjustment screw - same thing from here on out.) It has a high mixture needle, and a low mixture needle and it also has an adjustment screw for the idle speed. The carburetor is a typical 'walbro' clone from china. The plate on the diaphragm side of the carburetor has been extended to act as a shield of some sort, under the mixture adjustment screws. It's in the way and will need to be sliced away. Get a heavy duty abrasive cutting wheel for your rotary tool and go to town. Cut it off right near the carburetor body. Now you can see the screw heads but they are buried in part of the aluminum casting on the carburetor body. I cut away 3 sides with my dreml cutting wheel and then slotted the top of both mixture adjustment screws. Now I can get a small flat head screw driver in there and adjust them. Took less than 2 minutes to adjust it for best running here in Colorado at about 6000' altitude. Runs fine. Runs good actually. For those of you who don't know how to adjust the carburetor on a 2-stroke engine, it's easy. If you can run a vacuum cleaner, you can adjust a simple 2-needle carb on a piece of lawn equipment. The adjustment screws are there to regulate the amount of fuel going into the engine. The engine requires a somewhat precise amount of fuel at all throttle settings. Obviously at idle speeds and lower throttle settings, the engine needs less fuel. And at mid too high throttle settings, the engine will consume more fuel. Thats what the adjustment needles are for. Google it or use a wiki page maybe? It's really not that hard. Hope this helps!
Easy to start, and tons of power, great on weeds.
Poulin Weed eater came in its own sturdy box, well sealed and delivered earlier than delivery date. Fed Ex driver was friendly and kind. Very easy to put handle and guard on, used a Phillips screwdriver. I had it ready to use in 5 minutes, not bad! Neat thing about this weed eater is it has a special shaft. It's like an adapter to install 5 other devices, such as a hedge trimmer, leaf blower, lawn edger, etc. You have to buy these devices separately, but its nice to know. It came with a quick start-up guide. I recommend to read it, especially when starting for the first time and filling with gas. Works great! Blade turns when I pulled the handle. Very powerful, easy to hold. Love how fast it cuts grass! Came with bottle of oil to mix with one gallon of gas. If you have gas left over, don't pour it in your cars gas tank. Clerk at hardware store says it will hurt motor of my car. That's where I bought gas can, a good sturdy one designed for gas. I recommend this weed eater. Very nice, works great, easy to assemble and adapts for other lawn tools.
Don't understand some that had so much problem with their Poulan, this is the 3rd one I've owned. First one I had about 2 1/2 years when it was stolen. Second I still own for about 3 years now, third I just bought for my lake cabin so my attachments will interchange. I've had nothing but good performance with the first two.
1st off this is not the same exact quality as a Husqvarna, and that certainly is reflected in the price! However Poulin is the mid range product line of the same company that makes Husqvarna. If you're like I am and seek value in the mid price line than this trimmer will more than do the job. First the good: 1. Since day one this starts in 3 cranks or less 2. I was without a trimmer for over a month, once I purchased this one I put it through its test immediately as all areas were in need of trimming on a little over an acre. 3. I have loaned this to my neighbor also on about an acre started and worked great for him. 4. I have trimmed along our road from my house to the main road just short of ¼ mile worth of trimming. No problems no stalling no non sense 5. Line loading is easy, but would love to see them design the next generation with an even easier system like the higher end models. 6. Attachment capable, which is great, on the chainsaw may wish to cut branches which are not too thick. (See 3 under bad) 7. 2 Year warranty The Bad: 1. The trimmer is heavy compared to higher end models 2. Check the Air filter cover it is held on with a snap system, when new gives it an extra push almost forcing it on. My 1st use I lost the cover. Fortunately my wife has the eye of a hawk and found the black cover on the lawn after walking much of our little slice of the world 3. The unit could use more power, but it is what I purchased so the power is a personal choice I just crank it up prior to starting in the thicker grass. I believe the next step up is 27 CC for about 25.00 more bucks. Overall, If you don't wish to pay a king's ransom for the top dogs than the mid line trimmers IMOP are all about the same, except this one shares a manufacturer with one of the top dogs, that alone makes it a better mid line product. Thus far it has been just that a better mid line. I would rate this 5 stars if it had a little more power. Hope this helps make your choice easier.
This weed eater was broken from the time of delivery. I called the 800 help number because it would not stay started and they informed me that sometimes they are delivered and they need the carbirator (sp?) adjusted. I drove to three places and no one had the tool to do this adjustment. I returned the item to the store for a refund.
I did not expect too much from this trimmer as I was just looking for one to use around the house. I just needed one that would do it's job. The trimmer was easy to assemble and cranked right up. It came pre-loaded with line so I was able to go right to work, unfortunately the 25cc motor struggled to spin fast enough with two lines so I went down to one. After that it cut great. Then came the problems, the design of the head is confusing, awkward and CHEAP. My guess is that they want you to buy a better one but I thought that I was what I was doing to begin with. The head came apart on me a couple of times while I was using it but when I wanted to take it apart it was harder than heck! Not what you want when you are out in the heat. The line did not advance properly most of the time, I even broke out the manual again to make sure that I was doing it right. Today I called their customer service and described my problem. They offered to send me a new cover for the head. I told them that the problem WAS the head and all he offered after that was an apology. I let him know that I was going to return it. Poulan is not what it used to be. Hope this helps someone.
this was a peice of junk and was returned
I couldnt get this thing to last two years... pressing full throttle it chokes out constantly after a few uses, then string wouldnt retract making it unable to start. Took to a dealer to get repaired was told i was better off buying a new because of the cost. I eventually purchased a weed eater.. but before that i had to do a few modifications, you have to cut a hole on the side big enough for you index finger and retract the string your self. I wil never buy a poulan weed cutter again!!!
Upon picking up the weed eater I noticed the box was somewhat crushed, but didn't think much about it. I got home and opened the box and the weed eater was damaged behind repair. I'm returning the weed eater and I realize this is not Wal-Mart's fault. I hope Wal-Mart is reimbursed by FedEx though.
