I was pleasantly surprised with how well this air fryer actually works! It does not accommodate a large amount of food but a basic serving size is perfect for 2 people. It is easy to use. There is a guide on the machine itself as well as the operation manual that advise what temperature and time for cooking various foods, meats, etc. There is a control to set the temp and another for the time. There is a green indicator light when fryer is heating up. The light shuts off when temperature is reached. There is one alert "ding" when the fryer/timer shuts off. There is no off/on switch-is controlled by plugging or unplugging the power cord. The electric heat element is within the top of the unit below the fan. The instruction manual, how to use, how to clean, instructions are easy to follow, straightforward, and complete. The units is made of good quality materials. The knobs are solid and durable.
I love this kitchen appliance. We purchased an air fryer when they first came out years ago, but it was much larger than this one. The Proctor Silex Air Fryer with 1.5 liter frying basket is the perfect size for our family. Our older model takes up too much space and frankly, I just don't have a need for one that big. This one allows you to make 1-2 servings of your favorite food. Generally, I'm using the air fryer to make chicken nuggets or fries for the kids so, again, the size is perfect for my two kiddos. The air fryer is incredibly easy to use as well with a guide printed right on the top of the appliance to indicate how long you should cook it based on the type of food. This air fryer cooks the food evenly and quickly, giving the taste and texture of deep fried without the nasty oil! I love how easy the frying basket is to clean up. With a simple push of a button, the basket comes apart for quick and simple cleanup. On top of all of these benefits, the Proctor Silex Air Fryer is very affordable. Great purchase!
This air fryer is so small! So if you have a huge family, this is not for you. However, for small families this fryer is just fine. We tried to cook as many foods in here before forming my opinion and writing a review. This air fryer does the job! From kids favorites to steaks, everything come out cooked, crispy and delicious. I'm very happy with my nee kitchen gadget from Proctor Silex.
Measures: 11 1/2" tall x 8" in wide side x side, 11" back to front of the handle. D-shaped basket measures 6" x 6" x 3 1/2" deep. Amazing! Plug in, set temperature, turning the timer knob turns on the machine. Almost immediately, it's at temperature. Basically it's a convection oven that creates a gorgeous crust. Tater tots - 400' for ten minutes crispy perfection. Sides are plastic. I only felt warmth on the sides near the center (which is near the heating element). To me, the bottom did not get warm. However, could be placed on top to a a cookie sheet and a silicone mat. Cord is attached to the machine. There is no magnet to hold it on, because it is part of the machine itself. Amazing at reheating foods - they maintain original crispness. No need to microwave and eat sogginess. No oil frying smell. Easy clean up. You have to practice removing the drawer. It seems difficult at first, like you shake the machine a lot, but removal becomes smoother the more times practiced. I just had to get used to it. Top has pictures of food along with temperature and cooking time - very handy! Frozen French fries are 20 minutes at 400 degrees. It seems most foods take about 12-20 minutes to cook, with a caveat of may want to turn half way through cooking. Chicken strips without any marinade or coating, kind of have a dry outer layer. Would make a great wedding, housewarming, or treat yourself gift!
This Proctor Silex Air Fryer is much more versatile than I expected it to be. Frankly I was thinking along the lines of a regular fryer and assumed it would be goo for french fries, onion rings and maybe chicken wings. And it can do all those things but it's capable of so much more. First lets look at the fryer in general. It stands 12 inches high, 8 inches deep and 9 inches wide. There is a light at the top that indicates when the power is on and when it is heating or has reached the temperature that you set. Also on top is the timer dial. Another knob on the front lets you set the desired temperature. In the front is a removable basket and a pan that collects any dripping while cooking. The basket is roundish and about six inches across and about 3 inches high. The box says that it has a 1.5 liter capacity but I don't truly know what that refers to. The instructions says not to fill the removable basket more that ½ to ¾ full. To my surprise this is great for cooking all kinds of food from the expected french fries to fresh vegetables to burgers or fish filet. It is best suited to cooking for one or two people as the capacity is limited but since I live alone for me this is ideal. I tested it out with tater tots (which in my oven are always either mushy or falling apart) and they came out wonderful. I also tried tilappia filets and burgers which both came out great.
I received the Proctor Silex 1.5 liter Air Fryer to review. The Air Fryer came well packaged with padded protection in the box. The Air Fryer came with a sheet of easy to read directions and a small cooking chart on the paper. I received the black air fryer. It blends in easily with my other appliances. The Air Fryer is equipped with two knobs. One is the temperature knob and the other is for the timer. You turn on the Air Fryer by setting the timer knob. The Air Fryer is made of good quality non stick materials so your foods won't stick to the bottom of the fryer and makes cleaning up a breeze. The Air Fryer has two indicator lights that work with the time and temperature function. The Air Fryer has a slotted tray on the bottom that lets oils and grease drain to the bottom of the fryer making your foods healthier for you. It is very easy to use. You can make vegetables , chicken , steak fries and all kinds of healthy foods and snacks. The powerful air flow of this Air Fryer provides fast cooking. The 1.5 liter basket holds enough food for one to two people. For a family you would need to go up to a bigger size. I would recommend to a friend. I give the Proctor Silex 1.5 liter Air Fryer four stars. A con for this Air Fryer is that it has a plastic smell coming from it for the first few times you use it. This is an ideal Air Fryer for those after school snacks and single serving dishes. The small size lets the Air Fryer store easily and it fits well on a counter top and is a great addition for campers and parties. It is a good value for the price and a great addition to your kitchen. One thing you need to know is that you need to spray your food with some kind of cooking oil to make it turn out crispy. Way to go Proctor Silex.
I have never used an air fryer before and I honestly didn't know what to expect. I have always used an old fashioned fry daddy to do fries, tots, and whatever else. I admit, I was pleasantly surprised. We tried just about everything we could think of to try. We tried the basic tots and fries, wings and cheese sticks and then we tried to do tortilla chips, fish, sliced potatoes and many other things. This unit did great tots and fries, and it did pretty decent wings also. I followed the instructions exactly and had some good success. I did find out that you really need to toss your contents around half way through cooking otherwise only the top of the contents get crispy. I did use a light spritz of cooking spray to make sure the crispy factor was there. We did frozen wings, which was not in the list of things to try (there was only fresh wings listed) so we did have to add a bit more time to those. Overall they came out great. Here are my not so favorite things about this fryer. On tots and fries, since they are not moist when they come out the salt does not stick, but using an air fryer for "healthier" food, maybe thats not all bad. For my family I just don't think this unit is big enough. We are a family of 7 and taking 14 minutes to do the recommended 18 tater tots at a time is just not enough. It would take me an hour to make enough tater tots for dinner. This unit would be great for 1 or 2 people. I also think this unit would be great in a camper or a even a dorm room if it was allowed. It is fairly quiet, it did not stink the first time we used it, but I did wash all the parts it said to wash in the instructions. Overall, I was impressed with the end product.
I cooked steak fries and battered chicken tenders in this unit. The steak fries came out really good The taste was like the difference between eating baked potato chips versus fried. The French fries came out crispy but not greasy; similar to oven baked. I was careful not to overload the cooking basket. That being said, I could only cook one serving at a time, which was a little inconvenient. I did like how the fan turned off when I pulled the drawer out to shake the fries around in the basket. The basket and tray is non-stick and comes apart and is very easy to wash by hand. I battered the chicken tenders in milk and then flour and put them in a single layer on in the tray (I could cook three tenders at a time). They came out good but would have been better deep fried. I wish this unit had come with either a cookbook or some tips on how to adapt your cooking style to an air fryer. I went online and found information that was very helpful: for example to bread your items and then freeze them for better results in the airfryer. In all I had the air fryer in continuous use for 45 minutes to an hour and the outside of the unit got hot but not hot enough to burn you. It is relatively quiet, it sounds like there is a fan running. Hot air is exhausted from the rear of the unit.I really wanted this unit to be able to replace my countertop toaster oven and deep fryer but I don't think it will. As the title of my review states this unit does what it says. It is well made and easy to use and clean. I only gave it four stars because of the small capacity and that it will not replace other appliances for me.
I wanted one of these for the longest and now I had the chance to try an air fryer and here are my opinions: Positive - The Proctor Silex 1.5 Liter Air Fryer has a clean look to it, it is a quality product - It sits squarely without any wobble - No smell or smoke upon first use - The basket is easy to clean and made from metal - The basket tray is plastic and also easy to clean, the grease came off nicely (not the case with al plastics) - Cooking does not heat up the kitchen, the output heat is much less than a stove or oven - It's great if you want to use less fat for cooking, I was actually shocked how much grease came out off my hamburger - The suggestions for temp and time are spot on - It's easy to use, pop food in, set temp and time and off it goes - And the cord is not as short as for some appliances Negative - The photo is a bit misleading, since the 1.5 l air fryer only cooks 1 hamburger or 7 thick steak French Fries, or 5 chicken nuggets at a time, not together but each separately, which makes it not very useful for a household of more than 2 - It takes up a good chunk of your countertop - You have to clean two pieces as opposed to 1 pan or 1 cookie sheet - If you want to use it for more than 5 chicken nuggets you have to cook food one after the other, normally I just pop french fries and chicken nuggets on one cookie sheet and cook them at the same time - The taste of the hamburger was okay, it puffed up quite a bit and was juicy, but the texture was a bit rubbery, more like a microwave cooked burger If you are living in a college dorm or such, this Proctor Silex 1.5 Liter Air Fryer would be great, but I doubt that it will be my go-to appliance for everyday cooking.
I was so looking forward to trying this out. Sadly the term "Air fryer" is really just a misleading term for toaster oven. Except this is a lot more restrictive than just using a toaster oven. It does "toast" the stuff, it's just that in my toaster oven I can layout a bunch of tater tots or chicken nuggets and they toast all over. I flip them once and finish toasting on that side. In this thing, they are piled up in a basket and only the outer pieces get toasted. You have to repeatedly try to move the pieces that are towards the center and the bottom to the outer edges. It's 100 times easier to flip the stuff in a toaster oven. There isn't the tiniest shred of even toasting compared to toaster oven. It's not really a problem with this model.....it's the principal behind a toaster that piles the food up versus laying it out in a tray. I would not even have the guts to try to "toast" raw chicken in this thing. If you have a toaster oven, you already have a better version of an "air fryer". If you don't have a toaster oven or one of these.....get the toaster oven. The only positive thing about this device, it's easy to clean.
