I've had enough with Direct TV and the recent encounter totally lacked in any semblance of customer service. Time for alternatives. I'd tried lesser-priced antennas before, but only received Oklahoma stations (I'm very close to OK). My neighbor had gone the same route and finally purchased a more expensive one and was very happy. I shopped on line and compared the customer reviews. This model seemed to fit the bill and was on sale. It came a day earlier than expected. It should be noted that you need to purchase a mast for mounting, coax cable, and go the extra step and buy ground wire for added safety. You will need a lot of room for assembly as the unit is quite large. The instructions could be better as the illustrations are not very explicit, but the parts are few and a long as you have the tops and bottoms correct you really cannot go wrong. Very important: do not extend the lower reflector boom until you are ready to mount the unit. The unit will be more manageable and lie flat until you extend this boom. If you extend it before mounting the whole weight of the unit will be resting on this one piece (very bad). Assembly can be a one person task with 4 tools, but for final mounting you really need at least one other person. The unit itself is fairly light weight, but large and fragile. Plus, you have the coax cable attached. The instructions do not say so, but I would highly advise strapping the cable to the unit with zip ties, otherwise I can see it flapping in the wind. The transistor connection is a very vulnerable area so pay attention to restricting its movement. The instructions advise 2 people to do the adjusting for reception. I did it myself with a few trips. It's no big thing, you just point the antenna in a direction, run the program on your set for antenna reception and it programs whatever you can pull in with that setting. Each time you re-direct the antenna you have to re-run this program. I currently receive 12 stations loud and clear, all the locals, PBS (2 of them) and a couple I'm not sure what they are yet. I could probably get a couple more as there are a couple of stations still pixilated, but I'm happy with what I've got, especially the PBS which Direct never could figure out why I wasn't getting it. This unit will pay for itself in a few months. I cannot put a price on past frustration. An added bonus: I have everything in a power strip so I can really turn stuff off. It would take the darn dish sometimes 20 minutes to fire up and reschedule. With this antenna you turn it on and you have TV! I would highly recommend this unit for anyone who is only interested in local programming and looking to save money. This review was written 4 days after installation so I do not know how the reception will be during rain yet.
AntennaWeb.org said I would only pick up 2 stations at best where I live which is on a low between two good sized hills. I've picked up about 34 HD channels, time to dump the Dish Network(5 local SD stations) equipment and buy my own DVR for the local HD stations.
The assembly here is about an hour but the effort is worth it. We now get about 30 free stations 40 miles away from New York City. It is one of the best antenna's on the market for the money. Forget about returning it. I defy anyone to get it back in the box. Feels like its about 10 feet long assembled. I like that you can now throw your cable bill away! +++++ product. Thanks Walmart!
I bought this antenna because we love 50 mi from the nearest town. This thing picks up channels from Memphis crystal clear. We only have it mounted about four feet off the ground but it still picks up just about every channel that we would get if we lived in the city. My only issue was the instructions to assemble it weren't very clear. Make sure you have plenty of room when your putting it together because it's huge
Buying something unseen can sometimes result in disappointment when the product arrives but not in this case. The antenna is huge and we now get 37 channels of digital over the air broadcasting. The instructions on assembly were a bit sparse but once you lay it end to end it is not to hard to figure out.
I live in a very mountainous fringe reception area, closest broadcast antenna is 38 mile away (as the crow flies) and this antenna is doing a great job for me. I receive 16 channels with the antenna pointed in a south by south west direction and I'm sure I could receive more stations if I'd rotate the antenna, but I'm happy enough with what I'm receiving so I haven't bothered. I will note this is a large antenna and does need to be properly supported with good antenna mast and guy wires.
Schematic diagrams on instructions need to be more clear, and with more details. Took longer to assemble due to studying pictures and trying to figure it out.
this is a great antenna. I was hoping for the 150 miles that some people claimed they got. But, around 70 was the limit. that is the miles of the "local channels" in this area. Redding, ca. the next groujp of channels is 100 to 140 miles. It would not pick them up. So, you could probably be all right with a cheaper antenna and get the same 21 channels that I have now. The H D channels came in great in 1080p.
I was able to get a few more channels, mostly duplicates of ones i already had, however it DOESN"T pick up stations from 100 miles away, In fact I'm only able to pick up stations 60 miles away at night time. While it works better than the 30 dollar antenna I had, value wise I wish I would have saved my money. I mounted mine on a forty foot pole in an open spot bordering my field with no trees to interfere.
Does not pick up 100 miles. It's no better than the little $22.00 antenna with the built in rotor. I had to install a amplifier to get reasonable reception.
