I think this is as secure as possible,
it is a good product, strong and durable. The only problem I had was that all the pieces weren't in the package. Had to return them and get one off the shelf or wait until I could order another one. It was cheaper online, but I got it for the online price with no problem, but it was a hassel to have to return it and then buy another one.
In reading some of the other reviews - I do agree that the lock mechanism is a bit tough to work - however - if you work with it for a while and understand the principle of operation - it becomes easier - I also sprayed in lubricant into the mechanism and sealed it with the cap - will check it once a month for a bit to see if there is truly an issue with corrosion inside the lock - nothing yet - but have only had it a few months - you have to lock everything or someone will want it more than you as now everything (hitch, ball and lock) are all stainless
The quality is great, fits nice, but the key is hard to operate. it is a different kind of key and when you are trying to setup camp in the dark and can't get the receiver pin out, it becomes a bit of a nightmare. I prefer a normal key that works smoothly.
This could have been a very good lock: It is strong, has a decent key & is *mostly* stainless. Unfortunately, the o-ring in the lock head doesn't fit well, which lets moisture leak onto the 2 steel balls that actually lock the pin to the head. These balls are just plain carbon steel & WILL rust badly, making it nearly impossible to remove. (I had to use a prybar to separate the lock/pin.) This is a shameful choice of the manufacturer & makes this essentially a piece of junk.
I purchased this lock approx two years ago. It's been on my truck since I purchased it. I've taken it off a couple of times but not within the last 12 months. When I went to take it off today it would not come off. After attaching a large set of vice grips on the non-locking side and pounding it with a hammer, it finally came off. What I discovered was that the interior of the lock, especially the ball bearings, had rusted extensively. Even after soaking in WD-40 they would not free up. It's now a piece of very expensive scrap metal. I agree with other reviewers who have had problems with rust. I would not recommend this lock under any conditions.
I bought this about six months ago and installed it onto my truck's trailer hitch. This one was a premium price so I assumed it was a quality product. WRONG! I went to remove it with the key last weekend and it would not come off! I sprayed it with WD-40 and that did not help. I spoke with the Reese customer service department and that was a waste of time. They suggested sawing it off with a hacksaw and returning it. The lady I spoke to clearly wanted to get me off the phone as soon as possible. Look elsewhere for a receiver lock!!
I used this to attach a hitch cover 3 months ago. Today was the first day I attempted to unlock this receiver pin since putting this on. Guess what? It would not unlock. I park in a parking deck, I don't live near salt water, and I have not exposed this pin to so much as a tow, and the lock was completely seized. The whole reason I spent $30 on this was because it is stainless steel, and I wanted to avoid rust. I've kept the rubber cap on the lock since day 1, but it still did not keep this lock from failing. Rather than quickly putting my tow hitch on and driving up the road with my trailer, I ended up wasting my entire afternoon, first trying to loosen the lock with spray designed to break up rust in bolts, and ultimately cutting through this thing with a reciprocating saw and then having to drill out the core. I do not recommend this receiver lock to anyone who intends to leave this on your vehicle long term, and if you don't have that intention, then why would you be looking to waste your money on stainless?
Donât waste your money. You will eventually have to use a reciprocating saw to get it off. I was able to get it to unlock two times before lock would no longer operate and the key got stuck in the lock. Complete waste of time and money.
