I'm so glad I bought this serger when my old one gave me headaches. It is easy to thread and sews quietly and with good quality stitches. I have created masks, scrub caps and clothing with ease. It was a good buy and I am very happy with it.
I was afraid to purchase a serger due to threading, but after purchasing the 1034DX, I am in love with this serger. It is so easy to thread! Easy to use.
I have been sewing for some time now (close to 35 years) and never bothered with a serger. I always used pinking shears for a zigzag stitch to finish my seams. After doing some research (a ton of research) I finally buckled down and got a serger. Am I glad I did. This machine is amazing! It was a choice between this and the 1034D; the reason I chose the DX was because I'm right handed and it made more sense for me since the dials are all on the right hand side of the machine. I have used this to make rolled hems, sew with knit fabric, not use the cutting blade, use the blade, all making my projects look SO professional! It came threaded with four different colors of small spools, and looked simple enough to thread. It was more than simple enough; it was super easy! I can thread this thing in 5 minutes tops! I would say the only downside is that it's very loud. My honey says he knows when I'm using it because he can hear it downstairs. It almost sounds like it's cheaply made or not very sturdy when that is not the case. It may just be my table; I'm redesigning my sew happy room to accommodate all my Brother machines (4 and counting), so I'll know definitely once it's complete. One thing, please oil your machine before using or you could damage it. I read the manual before ever turning it on and it says on the last page (or second to last page) to oil her before using. Personally, I think that should be on the first page under BEFORE USING READ CAREFULLY. That seems like important information that shouldn't be seen as an afterthought in a manual. It doesn't come with oil, buy you can buy it from your local sewing supply store or the big chain sew/craft/hobby stores. The catch trap doesn't catch all the trimmings so make sure to open your machine and clean it out every time you use it. I bought cans of compressed air to keep on hand to clean my machine and get the "fabric dust" out. All that to say this machine was definitely worth it, which wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. I'm glad taking this long to get a serger led me to this one.
Very easy to thread, quiet, excellent stitches. Easy to switch to rolled hem, gathering. Well worth the price.
I love my machine and was reading some of the bad reviews and I'm just wondering if they oiled the machine before they used it, because if you don't things can go bad fast, it's in the back of the manual, it should be in the front in my opinion.
I bought the serger a few years ago to learn on. After much frustration, trial and error, I put it away and came back to it later. The manual should show the different stitch combinations and how to set the machine up for them, but it doesn't. The serger only does 3/4 thread combinations. It would be a better buy if it had 2/3/4 thread combinations and a manual that showed the threading of the different stitches.
I was invited to share my opinion and to be honest I do not like this 1034DX as much as the 1034D it replaced in an emergency situation. The latter, was more solid, did not shimmy and shake and move around the table as much, the tension discs stayed where I put them, the stitch was more invariablly good and in general it seemed a more solid state machine. Many claim threading the lower looper on the DX is easier - all in what you get used to I guess as I found the thread easier to secure on the D. That said, the DX, like its D counterpart, are great machines at an entry level price which spurred me on to my knit fabric sewing addiction - great for the at-home sewist.
Needs a longer cord! Four feet is not long enough to set up some places and should come with or have the option to buy a 6 foot cord.
I love the serger pretty much. The light bulb burned out right away. I looked in the manual so I wouldn't have to waste any time changing the bulb. Guess what...The book just said "Your serger has an LED bulb and it will not have to be replaced". Boy did I feel bad. Y'all need to change that! Well, I got the bulb out. Now where do I buy one? Do I have to pay for a bulb that was never supposed to burn out? My review would be 5 stars if I didn't have to mess with this. It's really hard to sew without the light.
Might be a great machine but it didn't have a power cord with it. For the price I thought it should have one. All that was in box was machine CD and operation manual. It was a factory recondition so I figured it would have all the kinks worked out. Guess not.
