Samuel Barber: Vanessa [Video]

Detailed product description

Abandoned by her lover Anatol, Vanessa retreats from the world, waiting and hoping with only her mother and her niece Erika for company. But when, 20 years later, Anatol's handsome young son arrives unexpectedly, he shatters the calm of this shuttered household of women. Past and present love collides, and the aftershocks threaten to destroy them all. Samuel Barber's Pulitzer Prize-winning first opera boasts one of the 20th century's most beautiful scores. Poised constantly on the edge of song, Vanessa unfolds in generous swathes of melody, rich in filmic strings and soaring brass, with echoes of Puccini, Berg and Strauss. It climaxes in a final quintet of Mozartean poignancy - one of the great ensembles of the contemporary repertoire.

Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan star in this remake of director Wim Wenders' landmark film Wings of Desire (1987), arriving in an extra feature-intensive DVD release courtesy of Warner Home Video. Warner is well known for its DVD-friendly releases, and City of Angels is certainly no exception; loaded with an extensive list of exciting and informative extra features in addition to a beautiful transfer of the film itself, Warner has once again proven its diligent dedication to the format with this must-have disc for fans of the film and film fanatics alike. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1, English Dolby Digital Mono, or French Dolby Digital Surround with optional English or French subtitles, this disc's extra features start where most recent DVD releases stop. Featuring two documentaries (one a "making of," the other "Inside Special Effects"), two feature-length audio commentary tracks (featuring director Brad Silberling and producer Charles Roven), deleted scenes with commentary, cinematography commentary, production design commentary, interviews with Alanis Morissette and Peter Gabriel, an isolated music-only track, music videos from the Goo Goo Dolls and U2, five theatrical trailers, production notes, and the standard interactive menus and scene access this disc is certain to make a film geek out of even the most casual viewer.
