I received the 3M Scotch Thermal Laminator 9" and a package of Scotch Thermal Laminating Pouches for free from 3M in exchange for a review. That being said, I am an elementary teacher and the mother of a toddler, and I am able to use these products at both work and home. Since I laminate things I need to reuse over and over for work, I'm VERY picky about my laminating. It HAS to be able to withstand the numerous pairs of questionably clean hands of kindergartners, first graders, and second graders that touch the laminated product. Not only do I like how the laminator works, but I also love how well the pouches work after lamination to protect my papers. In fact, I like it better than my school building's commercial-grade laminator. Also, I laminate sheets of paper that I later cut into cards, so it's very important that the laminating film does not peel. I am VERY pleased with how well this little laminator takes care of making sure my laminating film is heated up enough to form an excellent non-peeling seal, even when it is cut apart. I really have not found one thing I do not like about this little powerhouse of a laminator. Here is a list of the things I found I DO like: - Quiet warm-up and operation -- It was never a distraction to me or my students. - Only takes 4-5 minutes to warm up at the 3-mil thickness setting. I turn it on and move on to my next task until it's ready to go. - Outside of laminator unit gets warm, but not hot. I use this as an indicator that the heating element is working. - It's easy to tell when the unit is ready to laminate. There is a large blue dot that is illuminated when it's ready to go! - While there is sometimes a slight odor when the unit is warming up, I did not find it overwhelming or annoying. - The paper/pouch feed is very smooth and slow enough so as not to wrinkle, yet is fairly quick for the great job it does. - The laminator seals the pouches well with one pass through (regular thickness copy/printer paper). - The laminating pouches do not peel when I cut them apart to make game cards. - The laminating holds up well to student use and abuse of pages and game cards. - The unit cools down fairly quickly. - The electric cord wraps up in the bottom of the unit for easy storage. Overall, I love this little laminator and might even purchase another to keep at home, as I seem to use the free one I got from 3M nearly every day at work. I like that I can have something laminated quickly and be using it in a fraction of the time it takes to have things laminated when I send them off to be laminated in my school building. In short, I would purchase this Scotch Thermal Laminator in a heartbeat for myself or someone I know who has a need for such a product.
I got my Scotch laminator about two years ago, and use it all the time! I make medication cards for Hubs and I to carry our own and each others' in our wallets, plus emergency contact numbers and our doctor's name and numbers. In case of an accident, or to show at the doctor's office, they are invaluable. (Keep one on a fridge magnet, too, for EMS!) I laminate all my scrap-booked recipe cards! I worked hard to create them, so I want them protected from spills and splashes. The one pictured has instructions on the font and the back so I don't have to look up separate recipes to make that dish. I laminate instructions for things that I need to have around frequently, like a list of hurricane necessities. I laminate our car insurance card so it doesn't get crumpled in the glove compartment. Important documents, pictures, newspaper clippings (lamination keeps them from aging badly) and any paper (and sometimes fabric!) that I want protected from life's roughness gets sent through my laminator. Save your grandmother's recipes, letters from a loved one, and so much more with this incredibly useful tool! (Just don't do valuable letters from George Washington - it would destroy the value!) Laminate a small calendar, then use a wipe-off ink to mark important dates. I love that it has a handle to carry it with, as I do move it around sometimes, and I made a pretty cover for it so it won't collect dust when I'm not using it. I put it on a 3-drawer wood chest that holds my laminating supplies, and created a "Lamination Station". .
had this product for a couple years. worked great til one day i was warming it up as usual when i started to smell burning and saw smoke coming from entry way. nothing inside it...when i went to blow at it to clear some of the smoke away flames actually came out the other end. glas I was home and did not leave it plugged up
I purchased this laminator in mid-September and by December, the loading tray has already broken. I am a teacher and have used it to laminate for my classroom, but overall it has had minimal use. I am disappointed that this laminator broke after only a few months of use. I've used only a handful of times
I love the laminator but tray will not stay up!!! From the first week the tray would not hold. I have 2 of these and both trays fall. It also needs to be longer for 8x11 papers.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Though I have followed instructions closely, once fed through, the lamination does noteasily feed out of the front of the machine, which leads to jams and a ruination of the paper being laminated. I have tried calling but without a reciept, there is nothing that will be done for me. As a teacher, I cannot afford to replace this. STAY CLEAR OF THESE MACHINES...junk!
I bought this laminator today and can't even use it to laminate. I do one sheet and it comes out great and the second sheet comes out crooked and wrinkled. Have to give the machine at least a 15 minute break!! Horrible product!!! Very disappointed in this product!!
I bought this a few months ago and was initially thrilled with it. The laminator was easy to use and was good for at-home laminating purposes. The feeding tray isn't the greatest - it is short, and if you have multiple pieces inside your laminating pouch, they will fall out unless you hold the paper steady and together as it goes in. But all in all, it did exactly what I needed it to do... and then quit heating after a few uses. The ready button will not turn green, and the red lights stay on (and if you look up close, not pictured well, the red lights appear to all be on). I've looked up some troubleshooting mechanisms online and reviewers have suggested I have a defective machine. Not thrilled, a waste of money for me.
Used a few times several months apart and then all of a sudden the motor stopped working and the laminating paper will not move through. Very disappointed since the machine looks brand new and has been barely used. Please give me a refund or send me a better replacement.
I bought this a couple months ago for the babies that care for as a nurse, to laminate crafts and footprints. I've used it twice and it already broke on the latches as well as the paper size adjuster. Super disappointed
