Interaction Figures - Skylanders Spyro's Adventure offers over 30 characters to bring out the kid in everyone. It's all about choice, and each interaction figure has their own unique and expressive personality, powers and abilities which provide distinct advantages and skill sets for various levels, obstacles and enemies. Toys with Brains - Each interaction figure contains a "brain" that remembers the player's shared experiences and leveled-up abilities (e.g. stats, ability and attack upgrades, and gold collected) directly within each toy. This allows players to personally customise and power-up their characters, as well as take their interaction figures on-the-go to bring them to life on a friend's 'Portal of Power' for co-op play and player-versus-player arena battles. Categories, Strategy & Collectability - Interaction figures are classified by element types (Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Life, Undead, Magic, and Tech) and each has their own heroic challenges that are unlocked as more characters are collected. Players can collect and then strategically select their favorite characters within the different element types to go up against certain enemies, obstacles, and puzzles as well as access new areas within the different levels of the game. The Portal of Power - The mystical Portal of Power serves as a gateway between our world and the amazing game world, allowing you to 'Bring Your Toys to Life' by teleporting real-world toys directly into the game for players to control when placed upon the Portal of Power. Exploration - As the tale unfolds, players will encounter a variety of vivid environments, each with its own unique look and feel, and each providing different challenges, puzzles, and the discovery of secret areas, rewards and mini-games. Co-Operative Play - Players can join forces with friends and drop in and out of each level with as many different interaction figures as they like. Different strategies can come into play as players can select their favorite characters to tag-team against certain obstacles, hazards and/or enemies within the different levels of the game. Player vs. Player - A classic battle mode provides a selection of different game modes and arena maps for players to face off against each other. Each unique arena map contains a variety of obstacles, hazards and power-ups. Players will want to make sure they build up their army of different characters and level them all up to battle their friends on equal ground. ESRB Rating: EVERYONE 10+ with Cartoon Violence

My son has wanted this for a long time, but the price was too steep. He was very excited to get this.
great gift for my grandson
You must buy a "Starter Pack", unless the gamer already has a "Portal of Power"for each specific Gaming System (3DS, Wii, Xbox 360, etc.). Once you have a Portal of Power to that specific gaming system, then you just need to buy what game is wanted, & what Characters are needed or wanted, that the gamer does not have. But, the Characters are able to be used for any gaming system's portal (Wii, Xbox 360, 3DS, etc.). So, if they have a Nintendo 3DS, then you would get them the Starter Pack for the Giants, or Spyro's Adventure for the 3DS, then what ever Characters that the gamer needs or wants. You only need to buy the Starter Pack for the 3DS once. If they have a Wii, Xbox 360, etc., then you would have to repeat the process of buying the Starter Pack for those gaming systems, only if they don't already have the Portal. If they have one for that gaming system, then you just need to buy the game that they want , and any Characters that they don't have at all, because they only need one of each of the Characters, to use on any & all of the gaming systems. Purpose of the Portal & the Character is that when a Character is put on the Portal of Power, the Character comes to life in the game, and each one of those Characters has a different & specific power that they can use, to beat the game. Both of the starter packs for the 3DS System, have 3 Characters in the packages. Some games will have a Character with them as well. I learned the hard way, by buying the Giants Game with a Character, thinking that was all that I needed to get my grandson, but, my Son explained it to me. So, I then looked to see what I could do to get the Portal for him. So, I found out that there was another game called Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Starter Pack (this one), so, now he has 2 games, one Portal of Power (for his Nintendo 3DS), & 4 Characters (3 from the Starter Pack & 1 that came with the Giants Game Pack). He already has some of the other Characters from his Wii's Skylanders games.
I would recommend this game to all who like Spyro, you can play on all game systems.
I have both skylanders for Wii and for the DS3. Like many of the games that are made for multi systems, the DS3 is different than the others. It does not have the same story line or worlds. There are 5 worlds that you have to teleport to. Each of these five worlds have five sub-worlds (levels?) you must past. You must earn crystals to open a new teleport. You earn crystals by achieving different goals in the sub-worlds. It is a fun game, but nothing like what the other systems have. This makes it harder if you want cheats or walkthroughs. When you go to a sub-world, you can only take two skylanders with you. Makes things a little tricky on deciding who should go to the world. Some skyland combos are a must if you want to get the crystal.
