For all of her life, Lily (Marlene Dietrich, "Morocco", "Judgment At Nuremburg"), a poor German peasant girl, had found comfort in the Bible's "Song of Songs." Not only was its joy of life a comfort to her father in times of illness, but a reason for her to continue leaning on it after his death. A death that, except for an aunt she had never met, left her alone in a world of faceless strangers. Things began to look up, though, as she soon became the inspiration to aspiring sculptor, Richard Waldo (Brian Aherne, "Juarez"), and it wasn't long before their working relationship turned romantic. But when the simple process of modeling turned to the complicated prospect of marriage, Richard chose a life of art over one of love, leaving Lily to fall into the arms of an uncaring Baron (Lionel Atwill, "Captain Blood"), who offered her what she now desired even more than love - revenge.
