Android 2.3 plus gaming keypad make this phone amazing. Display is crisp (auto brightness control can be enabled or disabled). This is simply the best gaming mobile phone - period. Excellent call quality, very nice speaker and music player. The phone is well built and easy to hold. The camera is nise and it also has a secondary camera. I don't like the fact it has four keys. Some people would prefer the 'extra' search button. I'd rather take three bigger buttons. At least the buttons physical buttons. So they are not annoying like the capacitive touch buttons I had on the captivate. Thumbs up to AT&T for nice pricing and for adding a nice dock and cable to package. The dock is really handy.
I love this phone. I have multiple emulators; N64, SNES, Gameboy, and Gensis. They all run splendidly. Minecraft PE is also a must have. The battery consistently last over a day and a half with normal use, if you do a lot of gaming it may go down faster, but I haven't had this issue. The docking station that it comes with is very handy if you plan on using it as an alarm clock. The only thing is that the internal memory is kind of small at only ~500Mb and there are a few preloaded games that you can't remove, but with ICS this won't be an issue.
I went from an IPhone to this Android and I will never ever go back. It's easy to use, perfect size, nice big screen, and all the features I need. By far the best phone I've ever owned. It's also got a built in playstation that is perfect for someone like me! The batter life is average for one of these phones I guess..wish that were a little better. The only other complain I have is it randomly "freezes" and kind of pushes random buttons. I 've had to restart my phone several times because of that but it's fine as soon as it comes back on.
I have used this phone for over a month now and I must confess that I do enjoy it very much. I have found it to best overall smartphone expedience so far. All of my needs from a phone and then some are provided and it can supplement entertainment in a very busy world. The case recommendation is only what I feel would be best if you wanted a case from att. There is another case the Trident Aegis for the xperia play that would be best. It has android gingerbread 2.3.3, 2.3.4 should be on the way and Sony(Ericsson) announced that it would receive ice cream sandwich later this year.
I had an iPhone 3GS, and I switched to this one because I have an 8 year old son who loves Minecraft and Crash Bandicoot. I wanted something that would keep him busy when we're out of the house. I am also a gamer myself, and I absolutely LOVE this phone. The battery life is fine, it lasts much longer than my iPhone. My only problems with it are that it didn't come with an instruction book, and it doesn't really notify me when I have new messages on Yahoo, Facebook, or when I get new texts. It says it on the "lock" screen, but when I turn it on I have a hard time finding them. I like the Android version of the apps that I had for my iPhone. Yahoo messenger and Facebook are much easier to use on this phone than an iPhone. The camera is great. It takes nice pics. Being a mom, that is one feature that is extremely important to me. It's simple to take a pic and add it to my Facebook page without having to go to the Facebook app. It's quick and simple. The game pad feels nice and sturdy, and the games look very nice on it. I compared it to my son's PSP screen, and it's about the same exact size. The games look just as they're supposed to. The QWERTY touchscreen keyboard is OK, but I prefer to turn the phone sideways because the keys are a little small when the phone is turned right-side-up. But again, that could be because I am so used to my iPhone and the layout is slightly different. It has multiple options for the auto-correct, and I'm still trying out the different options to see which one suits me. Overall, I love the phone. I just wish it had come with an instruction book! It's taking me forever to figure out how to use it. But if you're a gamer, you're going to LOVE this phone! (I also have the car charger that I recommended with this review. It has the cord for the phone to charge, and it has a USB port so I can charge other devices at the same time.)
Not only does this phone allow you to play your typical Android app games, it also allows you to play full PS games. Crash Bandicoot is my favorite! :D This phone is very multi-functional. With this particular device you can do anything that you would do with a regular Android smartphone, plus you can play PS games!!!!!! <3
Now I've had the psp and the psp go but this is whole new level! Its like the perfect phone for any gamers PERIOD It make phones like the the htc hero look like garbage. It has six predownloaded games installed on it when you first buy it. Its 4G, touchscreen, and a portable gaming system. What more can you ask for! The typing screen is familiar to people who've had a psp or ps3 so typing is a piece of cake for them. The battery is awesome for a phone that does this much, and it can use android market and apps just like any other phone. On a scale from 1 to 10 its a 12!
The design of the phone is extremely nice. The back is curve, great design. Loud stereo speakers. Nice D-pad for gaming use. Timescape combines all my social status in one place. The user interface is very good. No lag, very fast. Game quality is very good. It can play HD games. Fast 4G internet. Sony Ericsson makes Xperia Play a great device with Android 2.3. I updated my phone to 2.3.4 and it supports HD recording, very nice. The screen off animation is great. Camera is good with 5MP and flash. The phone feels very comfortable on my hand. The color is very pretty. Screen is not that bright enough, but it's okay. Facebook inside Xperia is a great feature. Music quality of the phone is better than iPhone. There are many games from Android Market and gameloft. The dock looks great, works great. This is the best smartphone that I have ever used, compare to Samsung Galaxy S II and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Xperia PLAY 4G is #1.
This isn't a bad phone all in all. Coming from the Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 which I loved truely to the XPlay left me a little disappointed. My favorite features are pretty much all here. I miss mediascape. On the XPlay I cannot download album art it seems, and I totally hate auto correct, the phone feels so fragile, can no longer change keyboards, and so far I have had it for six days and already I loathe it lol. Improvements I have noticed a longer battery life although same battery as in the x10, duel cams, crisper/sharper display, and customizable app menu. I do so miss my x10 and although I'm sure it will fade with time, at least I'm still the envy of all my co-workers! It's not keeping up with the Joneses around here, it keeping up with me!!!
If 1 star is "Poor", I should be allowed to give it a 0. Poor is an understatement. Bought this phone now 29 days ago, before spring break, and of course left the box to return it at college. Thank the lord I go back tomorrow and can return it. Pros: Speaker - I love music, and this thing has booming sound. Battery Life - I've seen it be better than any other on the market. I use it a lot, have to charge it during the night. Games - Obviously, it's the PSPgo or whatever. It's pretty neat for the games you can get to work. Cons: Games - This is a gaming phone, but it's about 5 generations behind on GPU. Other Android's game better. Furthermore, the trackpad slideout thing is terrible. The physical buttons are good, but the trackpad is terrible in use. Speed - 1GHz, single core processor. Really? Gaming phone with 30-40% of the processor of other Android phones? It gets stuck and crashes trying to text. I crash listening to music, opening facebook, etc. 1GB internal - Terrible for loading games, many of which use tons of space on the internal memory, and the phone is already loaded with so much bloatware it can barely run to begin with. Sony Ericsson - I remember why I never see phones by this company. It's because nobody uses them. They force you to use their products. You can't use headphones with a mic built in, like from Apple, or Beats by Dre, or any other modern headphone company. You have to use their overpriced, poorly made headphones. Overall: Don't buy this phone. It looks cool in the store, and is neat for the first 10 minutes, but then you realize that you're going to hate the next 2 years with it. Closing note: Keep in mind that this is a company who got a 4.2/10 in the products category, even though it got maximum points in battery efficiency and avoidance of hazardous substances.
