I purchased this carrier for a family vacation this spring but have been using it to carry skis the last couple of weeks. It is a great value for the size. I had borrowed a friends Thule carrier and this one is just as sturdy and mounts the same for less than half the price. No problems installing hardware, it rides well and there is no excess noise.
Sportrack by Thule. Easy to assemble by one person (30 min max - if take a look the installation manual first!) The hinge works good. The lock works pretty good. It has number marked right beside match with number on two keys. A strap attached to the inside of the lid to make it easier to reach, pull and close. Nice, solid, cool look & low price! 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander Thule 45050 complete crossroad system ($250 on sale @ Canadian Tire) SportRack Aero 1300 Roof Box A26395 ($230 @ Walmart.com)
Rained the whole way from Columbus to myrtle beach and nothing got wet. Packed 3 - 20 inch duffle bags and some other odds and ends in it. Gave us room for the beach stuff in the back of the car. Very easy to put together, had no problems. Watched a you tube video that really helped. Won't fit big and bulky suitcases. Just big enough to lighten the load a little bit. Didn't seem to affect gas mileage and was very secure. We had strong winds and rain.
This is my first roof top carrier and when I first opened the box I thought it was a little flimsy. However, it attached to the cross rails of the roof rack on my '07 Ford Explorer easily with the included hardware, no tools needed, and made the trip from Florida to the mountains of North Carolina without a hitch. We drove 70 MPH on the Interstate most of the trip and there was absolutely no vibration or noise. I had to look at the shadow of the car to know it was even there. The fact that it was made in the USA is icing on the cake. There is not one reason to pay about twice the price for some foreign (Thule) made product.
I had to order the cross bars for my wife's honda odyssey rack, but once i had those, this carrier attached easily and worked great. We just took it through a snowstorm with 5 pairs of skis and poles with no issues. I took it off in 5 minutes to put it in storage when done.
great carrier for the money if you don't need a larger one. quiet, couldn't hear it on the roof, lock worked well, no noticeable fuel mileage decrease. Plan on spending at least an hour the first time mounting it and wrap your crossbars with some type of padding b4 mounting hardware to protect from scratching. Went through some rain and was bone dry inside. I also plan on putting some rubber weatherstripping on the lip of the bottom part of the carrier to ensure no water can get in in a downpour.
The hinges and locking system feel flimsy to me but the overall performance is pretty good. I had no road noise. It held up just fine at 80mph with plenty of wintery crosswind action.
This is a very nice rack for the price. It is the old Thule line with the "sport rack" name. The new Thule and Yakima etc. racks are better but way more money.
I used this box on a recent ski trip to Maine. The box easily held 6 pairs of skis and poles (170cc fit fine, but it won't take much more). It was easy to assemble and is the perfect size for a small SUV. The locking mechanism will not let you remove the key unless is is securely shut. Also, the pull down strap is a nice touch. The hardware used to attach to the crossbars is not as nice as the high end cargo boxes, but I knew this going into the purchase. To prevent metal on metal scratching of my cross bars, I put some cloth wrapped with duct tape on the bars. This did the trick. For a no frills cargo box that gets the job done this is a great choice. I got it for $179 at Walmart with free shipping to a local store. The price has since gone up to $199, but that's a lot better that the other online prices I saw.
Bought this top box to carry skiing equipment - it fits a lot of cargo However, mounting hardware is very clumsy and I put on lots of scratches to the roof of the car and the crossbars. It is very difficult to mount without help of another person. If you need to mount and unmount often, choose a different model.
