Not sure about the other reviewer

I have used stair steppers at the gym for years and years and always put off buying one for home because the brands at the gym were $3k to buy or more. I just assumed that was the minimum price. I looked around and found that this one is an acceptable price and bought it online from Dick's in case it was a bad item and I could return it. It arrived and we put it together in about 45 minutes. The machine is great!! I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about. The steps work the exact same way as the other machines out there. Same fluid motion. The handle bars are strong and metal. The computer is not very easy to work with and no it's not really back lit, but who works out in a dark room? Once you figure the computer out, everything is great. I use the manual setting and adjust the amount I want to work off of that. Each time you adjust it, be patient and give it 10 seconds to change to the setting you requested. It can go very slow or very fast. Like the other reviewer wrote, I think the pedals do touch the floor, but there are many other steppers that do this initially as well. As you begin, they pick up. From someone who has used a stair stepper for years, my only complaint is no cup holder! We just hung a bag around the computer area (it is metal underneath, so it does not put weight on the computer) to hang water bottles in and anything else. Very happy with this item.

Great for my needs

The stepper is sturdy and was easy to assemble. It's perfect for what I need - which is a convenient and efficient machine that affords me the opportunity to fit in a workout at home when I can. The one area that could use improvement is the computer display, which is clunky and not user friendly. However, at this price point I honestly wasn't expecting a high tech machine.

I really enjoy this machine. I have been using commercial steppers in gyms for over thirty years, such as the Cybex and Stairmaster. I have been looking for something like this Avari that is pretty comparable to these commercial steppers, and at a decent price. I gave it four stars because the calorie counter is off by about 800 or so calories; the Cybex at the gym is off by about 130 calories. But a good Calorie Calculator online can guide you on how long it will take to burn the calories you would like to burn. For my weight, age and height, I go for about 400 or so in about 35 minutes, so I just watch the clock rather than the calorie counter. This machine has very smooth action, just like the commercial ones. I don't know what all the fuss is about with regards to the programs and the resistance levels. I only pretty much use the first six in Manual Mode, and level 12 or so to cool down. And if running any of the programs, one can always increase of decrease the resistance levels on the fly. Plus, there are customizable programs that one can taylor to their own needs. I have only had this for a few weeks, and so far so good. At this time I really have no complaints. For a Quickstart guide to running this machine, I would suggest reading the lower half of page 17 in the Owner's Manual, entitled: Operation Instructions, Manual and Preset Programs. This will get you going until you figure everything else out.

I picked my unit up from a local Walmart store. It had some minor shipping damage which we were able to repair ourselves. After that, the unit went together smoothly. It is a well-built, solid unit, and is pretty quiet to use. As others have said, the control unit's software is not user-friendly and could benefit from a redesign, or at least a better description in the user instructions. However after some puzzling, I figured it out adequately. A minor annoyance is that the control unit has no battery back-up, so the time and date reset on every power interruption, but that doesn't affect my usage. I'm old, overweight, and out of shape, so I use this on the easiest setting, which is the highest resistance setting, in manual mode. This may seem counter-intuitive at first, but the highest setting means the pedals move more slowly, so you exert less effort. On balance, I am, so far, satisfied with my purchase.

Very dissatisfied. Not worth $999.00

The LCD light is not bright enough, very hard to read. You must use a ladder to enter a program because the petals are all the way to the floor. When lowering the pedal resistance for a faster workout the pedals sink right to the floor. For the price I paid, I am very dissatisfied.

DON'T BUY IT! Worked for 4 months and then stopped working. Customer service has been unresponsive. I am an E-3 in the military and I paid $999 plus shipping plus tax. They should be ashamed of themselves.
