[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My husband liles to joke that I am somewhat of a baby gate expert now that we have seven different gates throughout our house for our twins. All are different brands and different styles, and while I wasnt really picky about how they all looked before, NOW I just want to replace them all with this one lol! Its beautiful, so much so in person. We have it by our entrance to close off our formal dining as a play room for our twins, and we have received so many compliments. There are additional safety features built in, too, which has really helped (our girl twin figured out the top latch, but not the bottoms or the magnet part. Its like safety nets for smart babies!). It hides dirt and dirty hand prints while also being easy to clean, plus the pieces are so tight that our Roomba is able to clean straight down it without leaving dirt build up between the extensions. Ours is fully extended and it gives up no integrity; truly fits the extra wide doorways, unlike some that say they do but fall with the teeniest push. We have another by another brand that we also like, but the advantage this one has over that one is the entrance itself. While it hasnt been an issue for us, my father-in-law cannot fit through the other one. Its so narrow we literally have to take it apart when he visits. This one is about as wide as an actual door, its fantastic. We adore this gate and while I always try to find pros and cons to my reviews, I have yet to encounter a con. Its a wonderful gate, and twins-approved!
Fits our 59 inch doorway opening perfectly. Easy to use the locking mechanism. I like that the gate will stay in an open position when needed. The gate looks nice as well.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was so excited to open up my new Summer Infant West End Gate and put it in one of my sons bedroom doorway which is a bit wider than normal doorways. I hate having to keep the door closed all the time- I miss the natural light! My boys are ages 2 and 1 and very strong so after an easy install (I didn't use the extensions for this room and it fit perfectly), I tested it myself before letting them try their best at getting through. Installing was a breeze, and once I realized the latches weren't locking at first try, all I did was tighten the sides a little more and letting the door swing by itself allowed it to lock automatically without a lot of wiggle. Security to me is important because my boys are smart, and don't take to “safety” products easily- they open everything! This is why I love this gate because not only is it automatically locking behind me, but it includes a latch on the top for an extra lock on each side to either fully lock it or force it to only open one way (it normally opens both ways). These little tabs are on the top and the bottom! That's something I haven't seen too much in other gates I've used. It's a real wood gate with metal frame and the colors and wood match my farmhouse decor perfectly! When opening the gate, it gives you an option of either direction as I mentioned but the tab on top makes you slide it over and lift then push so to a smart child who typically “gets it”, they shouldn't because this process won't allow a child to watch you that easily and mimic how you did it. The special feature I like is how it has some resistance to open and then once you push it a certain distance it places itself into a forced open position- super helpful when going in and out of a room with a child, toys, laundry, the whole 9! Then it's back to a close with a tap for an auto shut as it swings on its own, or you close it yourself. Last thing I think is so important is its versatility, aside from all the features like auto close, extra locks, how it can stay open... it comes with the extensions and so many different size doorway or opening options! I have an open floor plan and extra large doorways. I can easily take this off of my one sons bedroom doorway and place it in between my walls near my kitchen and hallway to block the kids while I cook, or bring it in to our family room in the basement and block off the playroom, or even on the top of the stairs. Love the different options and how it fits the style of our home perfectly! I adore the Summer Infant brand and this gate did not disappoint!
Works well after six months. It takes some tinkering to get the gate to close and the pin at the bottom to catch as the gate swings back. I found that one needed to be careful that fieverything was perpendicular. It is a beautifully made product that, once adjusted, has taken no further fiddling. One note of caution: You may trip on the bottom brace if you do not have some way to remind yourself it is there. I used a night light to remind me. After a week or so, I subconsciously knew it was there and automatically step over it now.
Have had this gate up about two weeks now. Good quality as always from Summer Infant. Was a little difficult to tweak to latch easily in a 60” opening and is a little flimsy in the middle part compared with my other gates on other openings but am overall happy with it.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The gate itself is beautiful. The stay-open feature was also something I liked. The door was easy to open after a few tries (it just needed some breaking in I think). It came with hardware, instructions, and the gate was in 2 pieces (the gate plus the extension piece). The gate was made out of metal, so it was fairly heavy. I installed the gate in 2 areas (one just the gate and one with the extension). The instructions were a bit wonky to follow so I had my husband jump in and help (but full disclosure I'm not a handy person to begin with). I asked him his thoughts on installation and the gate itself: he said it's average and similar to other gates, but he did feel it put too much pressure on the door frame. I have 2 boys, 4 and almost 1. Both really liked the gate. The 4 year old could open it and my 1 year old enjoyed crawling in and out of it. The 1 year old obviously could not open it, but one time the self closing feature didn't fully close the door and he was able to push it open, so double check that always. We needed a gate for the bottom of our stairs (which needs the extension) because our 1 year old recently started crawling up them partially, so this gate will work nicely there!
The gate itself is beautiful, heavy, and seems well built, and is easy to install. The self close feature is nice, but doesn't work all that well. The gate doesn't actually latch a lot of the time. Adjusting the gate tighter leads to the door not opening. I would still purchase the gate again as the locking mechanism is easy to use, you just have to be sure its latched depending on how you're using it. Also a great price, esp considering its size.
We had a lot of trouble assembling this gate. The wooden gate does not fit in its frame. It looks crooked, the top does not latch (doesn't even get close to where it latches), and the metal frame is wider than the gate. I'm attaching photos so you can see. I know the gate is upside down in the photo. It is leaning against a table while we were trying to figure out the problem.
We purchased this to keep our dog away from the from the front door. It's a great looking gate but awful to operate. We use the gate with 2 extensions in a 48” opening. It is not screwed to the wall because we didn't want to ruin our new paint. The extensions constantly buckle. This makes the gate move around making our walls completely scratched up. Both top & bottom latches do not line up making it impossible to close the gate correctly. Because of this, our dog has either pushed through the gate and/or pushed it right over on a number of occasions. I can not wait to replace it!
