My crummy-looking yard looks much better after one use. Easy to rake up and there was a LOT to rake! I am a 74 (practically75) YO woman. I needed to get someone to assemble it for me. A friend tried it out and she just stood in one place - don't do that. I now have a small dirt patch in that spot. I do not bother with the bag because it would not hold all the thatch from my small yard. Raking is simple.
I really wasn't expecting too much from this, but figured I'd try. I ran it without the bag so I could finish without stopping. It only took 10 - 15 minutes to do a little over 1,000 sq. ft & another 15 minutes to blow & rake it into 3 leaf bags. Well worth the $$. It'll pay for itself in no time with little effort.
Used this season and dethatched my lawn. I set it level 2 and it removed a lot thatching. Made the mistake and did two passes on my front yard and it ripped up the new grass I put down last year. The backyard looks amazing after dethatching, laying new seed and top dressing. New steps to my Spring lawn routine.
I love my dethatcher. I purchased it due to the value and I was not disappointed. However, I did have a problem. My front yard has Zoysia grass which I have never dethatched in the past ten years. So in following the instructions I set the level at 1 and tried to dethatch. The machine was hard to push, the thatch got up under the machine instead of going in the bag and it cut off (motor overload tripped). The instructions say to let the machine set for a minute and it will reset. It took about 45 minutes. I did get permission to run the machine without the bag but it was a hassle to rake up the thatch. I noticed that there other positions between 0 and 1. So I set the level between 0 and 1. I found the machine easy to push and the thatch went into the bag as it was suppose to do. I would like the instructions to say something like this: "If your machine pushes harder than your lawnmower decrease the level setting even if it is less than 1. Keep decreasing until the machine does push as easy as your lawnmower." I did have to empty the bag on every other row. I just setup a trash can and dumped the bag as I came to it.
The 800E lawn Dethatcher does a fantastic job of working up the dead grass. The problem I had was I started out using a 14 gauge x 100' cord ,the machine worked for about 20 min. Then the overload protection kicked in then it took 20 min. For it to cool down. I then switched to a 100' 12 gauge cord but the machine now only worked for 5min. Then would shut down and take 20 min to cool so was not very impressed. I contacted Sunjoe and they told me in all likely hood by using the 14 gauge 100' cord it probably damaged the motor. Sunjoe without hesitation would send me the newer upgraded 801E model it arrived in 5 days at no cost to me,all I had to do was send the damaged machine back within 40 days at there cost. They were absolutely amazing to deal with. As I had my lawn completed I my not have opertunity to use the new machine for awhile but I am confident it will work great.I will write a review when I use it...as a result I would feel confident to purchase any of there equipment. Thankyou Sunjoe
Bought this on line a few weeks ago. Online experience very smooth and delivered on time...sooner than anticipated. Used for first raking of the season. Dethatcher works very well, but as I had read in other reviews the catcher is useless. It does not even fit the unit we received. The wire framing is too wide to fit the points of insertion. I fired up the lawn mower to "vacuum" up the thatch. A real back saver.
It works fairly well at what it's supposed to do. It has a tine height adjustment knob that works best on the lowest setting so the other 4 settings don't do much. If you've never dethatched your lawn before, doing so may be a big job for this machine and kick in the motor overload protection a lot like it did for me. We'll see how next year goes.
Bag capacity is much to small, spend a lot of time emptying bag for every 50 feet of run. Made of very thin plastic ,motor bogs down with a very small load. Don,t believe it will last for more then 3 usage.
For me, I found it very hard to push with bag on, with out bag not to hard. The bag filled up quickly and was very heavy to unload. Maybe if I was stronger I might not of had as tough a job in completing. I started on my yard for the first time yesterday and have more then half the yard to still do. As for me I would not of purchased it if I knew what I know now. But I must say that the dethatcher does do the job that it states it does
I'll start out by saying thank you to Walmart for great pricing and free delivery, they have always been great that way. Despite the fact we have a guy who dethatches for $40, I wanted my own so I could do mine and two other family members. The reviews said things like it "over heats quick" and "won't start again and needs long breaks in between." With this in mind, I was so careful and didn't push it hard at all. Within 15 minutes it over heated and didn't start up until the next day. The next day it ran 10 seconds and wouldn't start again, so I brought it back for return. For the 15 minutes and 10 seconds it did work, it was awesome. Don't think you'll be the one that makes it work for you. You truly get what you pay for. Good dethatchers aren't cheap. This one really works like a toy. Walmart, please get rid of this one to save money and time on returns.
