"The Thief" is the Academy Award-nominated (Best Foreign Language Film, 1997) haunting tale of passion, betrayal and innocence lost, as seen through the eyes of an impressionable young boy. Fatherless and homeless, six-year-old Sanya (Misha Philipchuk) and his mother, Katja (Ekaterina Rednikova), endure the harsh existence of post-World War II Russia. When the handsome, charismatic soldier Toljan (Vladimir Mashkov) enters their lives, mother and son fall under his spell. Katja is seduced by Toljan's virility and confidence and Sanya warms to the soldier as a father-figure.
