Dash Cam

I love this dash cam, the only complaint I have is that the second week of use one of the pixels went out. I would definitely recommend this dash cam just make sure you get the insurance, you'll also want to buy the hard wire kit which costs an extra 30 bucks and sams club doesn't sell it, if you want the parking mode to work. I got it installed by a friend of mine who installs audio/video so you can't see the wires, their wiring diagram wants you to run wires across your dash which would look like you got a cracker jack install.

A Great Dash Cam - Awesome !!

After a recent near miss on my way to work in downtown LA, I decided to get a dash cam. I was recommended the X500 by a good friend, who has a X500 on each of his two cars. I will admit that I bought a cheap dash cam before I bought the X500 and the difference in video quality and user experience is remarkable. Though both dash cams claimed to be 1080p Full HD, the cheap dash cam was streaky and slow. Very glad that the X500 and the rear cam had way better quality. I initially worried about hanging wires but no such problem after following the installation instructions on the guide. The X500 uses a tape mount instead of the suction cups that my cheap dash cam and I have to say that I like the tape mount a lot better – more stable and takes less space on my windshield. Overall, it was very easy to install and both my wife and I had no problem learning how to use the dash cam. It might seem expensive at $249.99 but the X500 has multiple uses beyond a dash cam. Firstly, the included rear cam can be used alternatively as a back up camera. The X500 also has a cool feature that will notifying you of upcoming red light and speed cameras. I had to drive to Colorado for the first time and these alerts definitely made my trip less stressful and in my opinion, was already worth the price. It's been a month since I've bought the X500 and I will be going back to my local Sam's Club to buy another for my wife's car. Don't settle for a cheap dash cam, people! Get one for the long run.

My experiences with the camera and the company.

When it comes to dash mounted cameras, one first needs to decide if they want one, need one or of course, not. I did not need one but I've always wanted to have one since first seeing them in use via police shows aired which showed the benefits of having them. I don't ever want to have to have footage of an incident but at today's prices and features, I can see having one just in case. My wife found this camera, The Thinkware X500, on the shelf of our local Sam's' club. She suggested I look into it and buy one if I felt it was worth the price tag at the time. I did a bit of research on the internet and the answers I found were enough for me to go ahead and try one out. I'm a do-it-yourself kind of guy but I would call my skills a 7 on a 1 to 10 scale if I want to be honest. The following is my take on the camera, installation and the value I can see receiving for the money. The package from Sam's includes the front and rear camera, cabling, a medium sized memory card, a single swivel mount for the front camera, a key fob and other things listed in the description. All items were neatly packages and free of any damages or even the means to get damaged while in shipment. My recommendation for mounting the front camera is to plug the camera in using the included power cord. After it is powered up, attach it to the swivel mount and hold it in position on your windshield. Adjust the view until the display shows a view with the hood in the lower 1/8 of the display and a centered view so you get as much side view on each side as you can. Using a sharpie, mark the outline of where the mount should be on the windshield. Now using a cleaning cloth, clean the windshield leaving the marks you made as a guide for placing the mount. Note that the mount can only be adjusted along one axis after it has been secured. I wish that the manufacturer had made the swivel mount to allow for adjustment in both directions but it will only adjust up and down once mounted. The included power cable is intended to be used as a plug in power cord to a classic cigarette lighter socket. This provides only one source for power and will not allow for the parking mode recording feature of the camera to be utilized. There is a dual power cord available for about 30 dollars. This cord allows you to hard wire the power from two sources. On source is from 12V full time supply and the other is from 12 volt accessory supply which is not supplied during the parked mode of your vehicle. I chose to buy the extra power cord and hard wire the system. I ran both the power cable and the rear camera cable from the camera mounted under the mirror, up to the front of the head liner. From there I ran it tucked under the ceiling fabric along the windshield and own the roof support column on the driver side of the car. The power cable ran to the fuse box below the steering column and the rear camera cable ran along the head liner the rear of the car and to the center of the rear windshield. All cables are completely hidden from view and safely behind the fabric. I mounted the rear camera with the same technique as the front camera but asked for assistance from a friend as I was not able to view the camera in the front seat while I was adjusting the camera in the rear window. All in all it is a simple installation that anyone with a skill set ability of say 3 or even 4 can do. No special tools are required but just the willingness to look at the best way to run a small power cord and camera cord tucked behind features unique to your vehicle as to hide the installation. Operation of the camera involves inserting the memory card. Although there is one provided, I used a 64GB card that I had lying around. The camera has an onboard format feature that prepares your card for use. There are features that the camera offers and you will want to select those that appeal most to you and your needs and wants. All of the settings are easily accessible using the camera and its mending system but for far easier use, I recommend bringing the formatted card to your computer and using the software viewer that is provided from Thinkware to set up your camera. You can make adjustments to the camera settings which are then written to the card at your computer. When you insert the card into your camera, the settings are transferred to the camera and viola… you are good to go. The images are very clear. You can read license places with ease. Both the front and rear cameras offer very crisp images of very high quality. The camera will prompt you to reformat the card every now and then. I suggest you do so as you have nothing to lose unless you've captured something worth saving in which case you should remove the card and back up the images to your computer and then reformat the card. Overall, I would highly recommend you strongly consider this camera bundle package from Sam's. I purchased 2 of them after my initial purchase. One more was for me and the other one as a gift. I had one need for customer service. The keychain fob that you use to access the memory card (if you wish) is handy and the first I've ever seen. The one I got had a flaw and so I contacted Thinkware customer service. With just one email, they requested that I give them my address and that they would send me a free replacement part. Without even knowing I was truly a customer, they sent me the fob in record time. I received it in a matter of 2 or 3 days. If you want a camera for the purpose of recording an incident that may occur either in front of or behind your vehicle… I highly recommend this camera package.

I have no doubt that this dash cam is top of the line equipment, but I had to return it. My problem was that the rear camera had to be mounted separately which meant that the extra wire would have to be run to the front and so on and I honestly did not want to do all that. Had to rate this camera or I could not post my comment without doing so, but I did not use it but as I said , I do think it is a great piece of equipment.

X500D installation

I installed both cameras in my wife's Subaru Forrester. It's a 'seamless' installation with no wires or cables showing. I also hard wired the power source. Unfortunately, it took me 6 hours over two days. I was so pleased the way the system worked until I fired it up and saw the rear camera was upside down. ##note to self, make sure the camera is facing the correct image before sticking it to the window. That 3M tape is great stuff. I've only powered it up a couple times and the image is crystal clear on both cameras unless the windows are dirty. KEEP THE WINDOWS CLEAN. The GPS is displayed on the main camera as long as you're using GPS in your vehicle. It will take me a number of times to dial in all the options the X500D offers. Now I just have to get my wife to use it. Pray for me.

The install and operating the front camera was easy. I ran the cable for the rear camera first, to make sure it was long enough for my Expedition EL... It WAS.. However, the instructions for the rear camera left me installing it taped in upside down. I installed in orientation of the writing on it being right side up... NEEDS AM ARROW or something to direct it. I was hoping the camera setup would allow me to flip it... Does not. Pulling off and reinstalled. Other weird thing. There is a speaker to hear the alerts with, but it faces the glass with the camera. Wouldn't it be better on the back, driver side, or bottom? Very hard to hear her.

Grainy picture makes licence plate recognition only possible when the vehicle is directly in front of you (Say within 5 feet). The camera also will run your battery flat if your cigarette lighter plug is always hot (this has now happened to me twice in my GMC Acadia), unless you purchase and install the hard wire kit. You can always unplug it every time you stop but then you may forget to re-plug it in when you start again... For the cost this camera is really average.

Bought one and used it within the first 15 miles when someone side-swiped us. Made it super easy for the insurance company to determine the other guy was at fault! So we bought this second one for our other car. But I hope we never have to use it, if you know what I mean!
