Though it would be impossible to tell from its scant liner notes, this three-disc set gathers together recordings made by Bob Marley & the Wailers in their native Jamiaca before their 1973 major-label debut, CATCH A FIRE. Included are numerous tracks that were recorded under the guiding hand of producer Lee \"Scratch\" Perry. Songs that later became classics, such as \"Small Axe,\" \"Duppy Conqueror,\" and \"Lively up Yourself\" appear here in a form similar or identical to the way they appear on the 1970 Trojan Records release AFRICAN HERBSMAN. The last of these is a particularly rousing rendition, complete with impassioned background vocals. The entire collection has the warmth of turntable-spun vinyl, as welcoming cracks and pops abound.
