I was so excited to receive the Tinker Toys. I remembered playing with them as a child. This building set did not disappoint! I really liked the original wooden ones but these had things the original never had. The pieces in this set are plastic and rubber. The box of Tinker Toys comes with one hundred fifty pieces. It comes with heads and hair for the heads, that can be changed out. You can build a crane and then put together a crane operator. It comes with a few bendable pieces that you can use to make the bridge and a flower. The box says three + but I think it would be hard for a three or even a four year old to take the pieces apart. They would probably need a parent or older sibling to help them. The pieces snap together but you really need to twist them sometimes to get them apart. I love the instruction sheet as it gives you fifteen very cool things to make. There is a little buggy eyed guy with fin-like feet that is adorable. We made the windmill as well as the bridge, crane and operator and the buggy eyed guy. There is even a little dog you can put together. Overall, I think any child would love to have this set. I think it is fun for all ages!
I played with these Tinker Toys with my 3 year-old and 7 year-old granddaughters. The 3 year-old said, “Cool” when she saw the box. She played with them for about 20 minutes and the 7 year-old enjoyed them for about an hour. They liked creating their own inventions, rather than following the instructions. They enjoyed making moving thing-a-ma-jigs, motorcycles, cars, fishing poles, people, and just experimenting. This helped them use their creativity and problem solving while having fun. In comparing this set of Tinker Toys with ones we have had in the past, they are larger and easier for young children to handle. This set does not have the very small pieces that the older sets had, but some pieces are still small enough to be choked on; therefore, the warning that this toy is for children 3 and up is written on the box. This set is made with bright and fun colors and have pieces that can create people and animals. Also new additions are some pieces that bend. This set snaps together and stays together, unlike the older versions. This is a real plus when playing with your creations. I would highly recommend this toy for hours of enjoyment.
These are great toys for all ages, even to adult. I wouldn't have a problem letting a child younger than 3 play with them with supervision. All of the parts are easy to handle and large enough to see. They are very sturdy. Even sturdier than the older wooden and previous plastic sets. As soon as the box was open they were all being put together by several of my children. Can only completely put one project at a time but can improvise and still make other projects, which helps your children develop, build, and expand their imagination. The box they came in is nice and comes with a plastic lid, but the box is just cardboard so I don't see that lasting long but for now it is sturdy. I would definitely recommend this product to others with children of all ages and adults who love to just "tinker". All in all it is a great product made better over the many years that Tinker Toys have been around.
I bought this for my 6 year old grandson, who loves to build things. It has so many options for creativity and his mom loves the locking tub all the pieces come in for clean up ease..
I have so many happy memories playing with the original wooden tinker toys - this new set is all plastic and works great. The older sets used to slip apart when they were well worn - this set, the pieces stay together well until you decide to pull them apart. The bendy pieces are really cool and make a lot more possibilities. The pieces are shaped perfectly for little hands and it really allows a child's imagination to go. Beautiful bright colors and lots of unique pieces for different configurations. The set even comes with a small person and dog figure for even more imaginative play. One set of easy to follow directions get the child started, but beyond that they can use the pieces to build whatever they can imagine. The wheels on vehicles really spin well, so once they build a vehicle, they can play with it. Hours of fun and pick up is easy back into the box.
My 4 year old grandsons had so much fun with Tinkertoy Transit Building Set. They have never played with Tinker Toys before. My experience is with the older wooden version. These were brightly colored plastic pieces that locked together. It also comes with an instruction sheet,(which I tore when taking them out,) I wish was better made. Easy to follow pictures, the simpler ones the boys can do themselves. The only problem we had was not enough pieces, they were having so much fun they wanted to build, and build, and build. We loved how many wheels were included and there are even flexible pieces now. Well made and will be our favorite for years. Can't wait to add on to our set.
The pictures on the box drew me right away to the toy. Saw the warning of a choking hazard in big print but the toy is geared to 3+ which is just right. I like the idea of creative play. The box could be used to store the parts. I loved the suggestions of things to build that were included. Helped to get us started. Also loved that it was pictures and big so you didn't need a magnifying glass to follow along. I felt that a 3 year old could do with some adult guidance to start but the pieces are plastic and nice and large. I like that they are made out of plastic and can be washed if they get dirty or sticky. Also makes them pliable which is good for creating things. The pieces have a really tight fit and takes some jockeying to take apart but I think kids would be fine. Connecting the parts is easy. My 4 year old grandson is able to put together the pieces and take apart. The parts are larger than the regular tinker toy from my past and with all the different pieces very up to date. So many different projects and endless ideas for creating projects. Very fun. I would highly recommend this toy as it gives the kids a chance to use their motor skills and brain for endless hours of fun.
LOVED seeing Tinker Toys re-released in plastic, just in time for my three-year-old nephew! My family has always been a fan of the Tinker Toy brand -- they're durable, creative and downright fun -- and at first I wondered if making them in plastic would ruin the classic feel of this building toy. Well, the short answer is, no, it does not ruin anything, and if you can get over the fact that the pieces are not wooden (sometimes hard to do for us older folks), you will eventually admit these are just as nice and even more versatile than their wooden predecessors. What amazed me and delighted my nephew right out of the box were that most of the pieces are bendable and flexible and will join with other parts while bent or flexed. The possibilities!! My nephew had not even been playing ten minutes yet when he produced a flower by bending three or four straight pieces into flower petals (see picture). I was impressed. He has gone on to create such artistic masterpieces as a train station and other assorted plant species, and the little people included offer endless play possibilities. It truly is a wonderful collection of parts in this box, and my nephew, for the first time in his short three years, can be left alone to build, play and create for an hour or so without having to ask for adult help in his efforts. Thanks, Tinker Toy; this set is absolutely fantastic!!
I came in with no expectations of how my 4 year old would respond to Tinkertoys. I remember having it as a kid myself, and was surprised that it's now made of plastic (not wood), and the parts are bigger. On first try, both my son and myself had a hard time pushing the sticks into the connector pieces and getting them to lock into place. And I had to walk him through, step by step, how to build an easy object. But let me just say, that after that introduction to the toy, and 'tinkering' with it a little, he got the hang of it, and hasn't looked back. EVERY DAY there is a Tinkertoy moment. At one point, he's played with it for 2 hours straight. UNHEARD OF in our household. He's built all the demo structures presented in the instruction manual. I wish there were more ideas printed out that came with the set. It's really encouraged his imagination. He puts pieces together and builds things that I would never have thought of. We don't allow any toy weapons in the house, so he built himself a tinkertoy "gun" and a "sword" all on his own. Brilliant, but we had to have a family conversation about that. My 1 year old, also loves "playing" with tinkertoys. When her older brother plays, she likes to just put pieces together (never actually connecting them), and seems to have fun mimicking her brother. The pieces are big enough where I don't have to worry about her swallowing them (unlike legos). WINNER! We're going to buy another set, so that he doesn't have to build something, then take it apart in order to build something else.
This was a great gift for our grandson's fourth birthday. I was so happy to see they made tinkertoys for younger children. They have sturdy pieces that fit together nicely and stay connected. We had such fun "building" an airplane together and playing with it afterwards. I would have given it 5 stars except for the fact that once you build one item, you can't put together another because of the lack of pieces. But...a great gift non-the-less.
