In You Can Play Jazz Piano, Vol. 1 -- Getting Started, the celebrated, hip pianist Warren Bernhardt instructs at-home viewers in the basics of ad-libbing improvisational riffs on jazz piano. Bernhardt's lesson interweaves music theory, instruction, technique, and onscreen demonstrations to help at-home viewers master the piano, following in the footsteps of stride and swing gurus such as Johnny Costa, Art Tatum, and Bill Evans. Bernhardt begins with fundamental concepts -- hand positioning, diatonic scale ascension and descension in thirds, chord shapes, chord progressions, and chord inversions -- and leads the viewer, ever so gradually, into melodic improvisation and accentuation, by teaching his audience a number of jazz and blues scales.
