I have an OLDER HP LaserJet 6L that works perfectly through a parallel port. Our oldest laptop was having hardware issues so I had to buy a new USB printer or find another solution. I ordered the Cables Unlimited USB to Parallel Printer Cable from Walmart.com to see if it would work. I chose FREE Site to Store shipping and it arrived 2 days later. It took a couple of tries to get it working with our "USB only" laptop, but nothing major. It works flawlessly and I am 100% satisfied with this product. Great buy for $18 including tax and free shipping. Both laptops run Windows XP, so I can't say how it works with Vista. If you need it, BUY IT and TRY IT!
Well, at first it didn't work. Many, many people were having the same problem with this particular printer. I have a HP laserjet 6P and my new computer is running vista and has no parallel port... Walmart was about half of what best buy or radio shack charged. I hooked it up and... nothing. I worked on it all week-end to no avail. Here is the trick... Plug in the cord, but don't plug it in to the printer, yet. When it ask for a driver, insert the mini cd that comes with the cord. I almost missed it, it was small and between the cardboard at the bottom. It will install the driver for the cord. Once this is installed, then plug the cord into the back of the printer... PRESTO! I am male, I don't read instrustions well. There wasn't any instructions, per se... But it did list on the back of the package in small print, under "contents;" Installation cd included... ARGH
High quality product, made from fine materials with very good workmanship at an exceptional price! It didn't hurt that my new computer didn't have a parallel port and I wasn't ready to retire my desktop HP LaserJet 6L and I was desperate; highly recommended. jg125
Not Windows 7 compatible - good luck if you have an older printer with this type of connection.
Just install the driver that comes with the CD. After you are done, connect the cable to the printer, select LPT2 as your new printer port (from "Start-Settings-Printers and Faxes menu"), and you are ready to use your old printer!
I usually read the directions last. I did with this cable. The minidisk software included with the cable solved all my problems getting the printer to work. I have a new appreciation for a "compound device." It took a little work on my part to get the printer working but it works fine (had to choose LPT2 port for the printer instead of creating a USB01 port).
After spending much time, couldn't get this to work with my Canon BJC-80 printer and Windows XP. Had to return it. Mini-disc with software/driver was hidden in the packaging and I only found it by chance. Too bad- would have like to be able to use my reliable portable printer with my new netbook. Also, there was warning about compatibility with Windows when first trying to install.
I purchased this cable to connect my Compaq laptop that runs Windows XP professional from the USB port to a HP Laser Jet 5 printer that has a 36pin parallel cable. First the product comes with a mini CD with a message printed on the envelope to follow enclosed instructions, but no instructions were included. I attempted the installation but was unsuccessful. I read reviews that stated if you are running Windows XP then you would have to download the software. I went to Cables Unlimited's website and downloaded the software and yet another unsuccessful installation attempt. I contacted Cables Unlimited for technical support and the receptionist stated their technical support department does not take consumer calls. If I needed technical support then I would have to email them. I sent an email to technical support and got a response back approximately 10 days later. Cheap defective product and poor customer service and support from Cables Unlimited. I would not recommend this product. A cable that is 3 times as much was worth the extra money.
This cable will not workf or Windows 7. The disk says the drivers are there but they are not. I purchased another cable, plugged it in, and the drivers automatically downloaded. It worked immediately. I could never get this cable to work no matter what I tried.
I couldn't get the cable to establish a connection to either of my laptops. I tried for about an hour but it kept saying it didn't recognize a connection to the printer. I returned it to the WalMart store and they gave me my money back so I am pleased with WalMart's service. The cable didn't work out for me.
