Best bang-for-the-buck phone on the planet

I have 5 of these phones! (4 Verizon pre-paid versions and 1 unlocked version directly from Motorola) I had originally heard about this phone on Amazon. There was a lengthy review from a guy who's had at least 25 or more Android phones in his life and he raved about this phone. I was going to get the flagship OnePlus phone but he convinced me to give this one a try. The only question, since this is a locked phone, was whether or not it would work with a GSM carrier like AT&T. The answer: It DOES work on GSM carriers (Verizon is a CDMA carrier, which is different. But the phone can handle both.) I originally ordered the unlocked version directly from Motorola, but it got hung up in some weird customs paperwork red tape so I decided to run up to Walmart, buy the locked Verizon version, and see if it worked (with an unlock code readily available on eBay for around $2). It worked like a charm, so while they had my "real" E4 tied up in customs for a week, I started using this $40 version in its place. I liked it so much I ran up and got another Verizon $40 phone (+ $2.20 for the unlock code) before I ever received my "real" E4. Interestingly, I actually prefer the pre-paid version to the "real" version. It has some nice built-in features (like the ability to click a box and get a numerical percentage of the remaining battery life without having to install a separate app) and the updates are more regular with the Verizon version than with the Motorola version. This phone is quick, bright, has great battery life (AND a replaceable battery!) and has a lot of nice features, like a fingerprint scanner that actually works. Personally, I prefer its 5" size to the larger 5.5" size of the E4 Plus. And you just can't beat the price. I did do one thing that really made this phone a grand slam, because the internal 16GB of memory is a little inadequate. I activated the "Developer Options" hidden feature (Google to find out how to do that) and afterwards selected the "Force allow apps on external" option from within the "Developer Options" section. This is critical to allow an added memory card to absorb some app data. Without this option, the internal memory will eventually get overloaded; WITH this option, the phone is perfect. NOTE: This approach is different than formatting the memory card as "Internal" (vs portable). That option, available after Android 5, is a nightmare. This option basically does the same thing but without all the headaches associated with formatting the memory card as "Internal". (Google that if you want a whole list of the problems encountered.) This is, without a doubt, the best phone on the planet for the price. In fact, it's better than a lot of phones costing 10 times as much.

I've had this phone a week now with no issues, it's just a really good phone. I obviously wasn't going to expect miracles here but it's nonetheless the best deal out there. The specs are already on here but here's the take-away: + 5" 720 HD IPS 2.5d screen + 8MP rear/5MP front camera w rear AND front LED flash + 4G LTE support, dual-band wifi, BT, and GPS + 1.4Ghz quadcore processor + 16GB memory, 2 GB RAM + Support for nano SIM and microsd + Android 7.1.1 "Nougat" + Fingerprint reader w/ one-button navigation + Front-facing speaker - Locked to Verizon prepaid Specs that are fitting for the price with some surprising extras like the front LED flash, fingerprint reader, one button navigation, front speaker, and dual band. So...you get ALL THAT for $40 right now. BUY BUY BUY!

Bought this very same phone for my wife from Amazon for $99. They sold it unlocked & we set it up with Republic Wireless. Republic had the cheapest prepaid plan: $20 for 1GB wireless data + unlimited calls/text [on the T-Mobile network] + unlimited data when using your wireless network at home [or any wifi network anywhere]. It was our 1st smartphone and she couldn't be happier to finally upgrade from her old flip phone. So then I bought this phone from Walmart for $40, to replace my old flip phone. It is the same phone as my wife's, only it is locked to Verizon. We had an old Verizon family plan for our flip phones that cost us $85/month. My wife's phone came with a new phone #. When I got this Verizon-locked phone from Walmart I did NOT activate it as the instructions wanted me to do. I just put in the battery. Then I called Verizon and told them I wanted to make a change to our family plan. Told them I wanted to keep one of the phone #s on that plan, and use it on a new prepaid Verizon plan. I wanted the other # on the family plan to be ported to another carrier [Republic Wireless]. Since I hadn't done anything on this new Verizon-locked Walmart-bought phone [other than put in the battery], the Verizon rep handled EVERYTHING for me on the phone. In less than 10 minutes the rep had my new phone up & running, keeping the same phone # I had, and taking the first payment of $40 for my new Verizon prepaid plan [3GB/month of wireless data + unlimited calls/text + unlimited wifi data]. We then googled up the Republic Wireless website to port over my wife's existing phone # she has with Verizon. It was really easy to do [the only problem was Republic doesn't want you to enter the "dash" character that is part of the Verizon account #. It failed until we realized "hey, let's try NOT putting in the "dash" and VOILA! It accepted it our request to port my wife's #]. In less than 24 hours from having walked out of Walmart with this phone, my wife and I each now have this moto e4 phone and they both have the same phone numbers we previously had. If Republic Wireless service proves to be ok, I plan on switching this Verizon-locked moto e4 over to Republic. Many people have done this; this moto e4 CAN work on any network, it's just that this Verizon-locked version of it has had all the other networks disabled. To enable it to work on other networks, people just get an unlock code, easily bought on ebay for $2. [You also would need to buy a sim card for another network]. So our $85/month flip-phone family-plan is now gone. Verizon sent a confirming email to us that the account is deactivated now that there no longer are any phones on it. Woo hoo! $42/month for this moto e4 + $20/month for my wife's Republic moto e4 = $23 less than I had been paying for flip-phone-only service. Woo hoo again! In a month I expect to save another $19/month when I unlock this Verizon-locked moto e4 & switch it over to Republic. WOO HOO!

I'm a Samsung person but when my phone broke, I had to find something I could afford right away. Read the reviews and got the E4. So far I'm really pleased! Was tricky figuring out how to get apps to save to the SD card. Lots of settings to deal with that were different from my previous phones. Less bloatware on this phone which is a huge plus. Can't beat the price. Of course it's not going to do all that a high end (and high priced) phone will do but it does everything I want it to do.

This phone is fast and weighted perfectly for a premium feel. The thing that most surprised me was how sharp the screen resolution is. It may only be 720p but it looks much sharper than that. As good as my 1080p screen on my s8+. The downloads are incredibly fast. Surprisingly fast, even. The web browsing is the exact same story: Surprisingly fast. This amazing phone is very close to being a flagship-replacer. I use it as my backup phone and I'd recommend it to anyone, anywhere for any usage.

I love this phone! A few months ago my old phone broke so I purchased an inexpensive one at Walmart (under $40) to get me thru the summer. The phone didn't hold a charge, I couldn't get service at my house thanks to Family Mobiles change from Tmobile to Tracphone. The phone was the worst and only lasted 3 weeks. I wisely switched from Family Mobile to Verizon and purchased this Moto E when I changed. I was apprehensive to purchase another cheap phone but I did and I have to say this phone is awesome!! I really recommend it.

YES! I can't believe I got this phone for about $40. Fingerprint scanner, great screen, great call quality....I could go on and on. BEST phone on Verizon prepaid right now for the money. You may not be able to find it in store either because it's going FAST!

Ok the 3 star rating? This person has no idea seems how to use these! I'm on moto e4 typing right now. Compared to prices of Samsung jewelry or j7 and moto e4 plus. Unless you must have tons of junk fb, angry birds, tweeter, candy crush. Well maybe not for you. But streaming during web, emails, and text phone calls its great. Besides this is networked to my computer and TV! Listen. Get SwiftKey, bluemail, I like Walgreens (at Dr can see if I need a refill) Google calendar is awesome! And if you use GPS waze will tell you how far up a wreck is and what side of road besides cops running radar! And want a better call app true caller will block spam calls and has built in text messaging and block them as well!

I bought this as a replacement for my old phone and I was looking for something cheap. I did not expect the quality of the device for what I paid as it was only 39 bucks. It runs the latest Android OS and although I had to root the device in order to place it on a different network I will say that wasn't difficult to do at all.

I'm coming from an iPhone 7, and I'm actually really impressed with this phone. It's really fast and responsive, there are some pretty cool features that come with the phone & it having the latest Android system. The camera is probably what I'm most impressed by, it's obviously not the best but I think it's pretty nice. The flash on the front is pretty cool for selfies. The Emojis aren't the best but I was more than happy to see you can change the colors and it has a lot of new emojis added like iPhone. You can't go wrong with getting this phone for the price, performance and Verizon's network. Highly recommend for those on a budget.
