this is the first brush my little poodle mixes have ever tolerated - they growl with other brushes because they are too scratchy or pokey. dogs are very sensitive animals and they are sensitive to touches and sounds and everything else and they really love being brushed with this, im surprised because they normally dont like being brushed. this is nice and soft and i can brush their paws and face and they love it. id call this semi-firm - it isnt scratchy and doesnt poke your hand when you push down on the bristles but it isnt soft like a toothbrush. it doesnt detangle or anything but it takes off the loose hairs and does a good overall brushing. i was going to buy one for myself too just because i like the feeling of holding the paddle instead of a handle. I dont like brushing my hair because it usually hurts because it is fine but there is a lot of it and gets tangles easily so i plan on getting one for myself. good brush overall.
The brush was just what I needed to style my hair after breast cancer treatment took my hair. The brush helped me get style that I couldn't get with other brushes.

Like the boar bristle brushes, this is the 2nd one I have bought.
The bristles have a nice rigidity but aren't harsh on skin. I'm bald up top so I can't say much for scalp.
