Small and quiet. Easy to setup. Very reasonably priced.
I purchased the 12 TB EX2 4 years ago. It runs 24 hrs continuously without any issues. It's not a toy for just storing data. This is a serious machine that does serious work. It can do everything you need for home and your business. Record streaming video that you can set up for a 4:00am TV recording. Plug your device in the usb to back up your machine. Windows Mac OS IOS Android mp4 all photos from all devices. It will automatically backup your phone pad computer cameras and portable storage that is on WiFi or Data. It will mirror backup index sort anyway you prefer to set it up for. Your whole family and or Business employees individually. It comes with multiple software for you to be prolific at the skill you're using. Requires an internet connection for out of network use. You can be half way around the world and connect in an instant. I've connected from South Africa to the US just as you were sitting in your lazy boy. Set up must be by the manual, for errorless use. I have a 1250 GPB s router that makes use very fast. Keep it in an open space for good ventilation, and clean off the dust and your good to go. I've been using these drives for 10 years with no major issues that couldn't be resolved. I recommend purchasing more storage than you originally want. You find more and more to store. For long term storage, this is an excellent option.
Overall I am happy with the performance of this drive, but I am very dissappointed that after upgrading to OS 5, I lost the support of WebDAV and the ability to connect to the drive without an internet connection. Two primary reasons I bought the drive in the first place. I am happy enough with WD that I'm choosing to keep it still, in hopes that they will update the firmware to include this in the future.
This personal cloud drive is the ideal solution for a device to act as a cache server for your main cloud drive. I use it to store movies I am going to watch in the near future so that there is zero buffering issues.
The device itself setup was easy, plug & play disk installation. However, the network setup is still ongoing (10+ days). My previous EX2 was easy, so I think setup for EX2 Ultra has degraded. Windows 10 21H2. MyCloud.com/setup wants to copy all data to the Cloud. I don't want that. I just want a simple local network storage. Authentication protocols default to mismatch Win-10 (security reasons). It was trial & error setup all the way. There remain inconsistencies from my other two WD NAS devices. Support will send you tons of links to common issues, but you'll have to wade through them all and hope to find one that actually helps. EX2 Ultra works fine once you get it connected.
I like My Cloud EX2 Ultra, but not happy with being obligated to upgrade from my old EX2. One of the biggest problem with this upgrade is the lack of providing a way to transfer almost 4TB of data from the old unit to the new one. When you force us purchasing your upgrade, at least devise plan to assist data transfer.
Stay away from this product - unsupported mess that will never stay connected for a long enough period of time to be considered a viable NAS solution.
This is absolute garbage. If I could give it 0 stars I would. It has shown a faulty drive 1, 3 times in row. I swap out the drive, it works for a few weeks then the same problem reoccurs.
When I tried to register the drive the S/N came up invalid. It appears that either the factory never input it or Walmart is selling bootleg merchandise. I am currently fighting with Western Digital (Horrible customer service!) about either getting it registered or replacing it. I wrote to their CEO. I may have to return this one to Walmart.
I bought this to replace a deprecated MyCloud EX2. I assumed that it would have all of the capabilities of the earlier model - just more security. I got the unit, set it up. Moved it to the remote office (an optometrist's office) and saved data (photos of patients' corneas and retinas taken during exams) to it. I then returned to my office to download the files to the off-site backup device (which I had done with the earlier model). Much to my surprise, I couldn't download the backup folders. I called tech support and was told that I could download individual files - but not folders. With thousands of photos of eyes and the databases linking them, this would be totally impractical. I am returning the unit!
