I put 350 movies and plan to put 6000 photos and videos on it.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This 4TB drive is compact and just want I needed to back up my old Mac. I plugged it into my new PowerBook, opened disk utility, and had it formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in about a minute. Since I have an old 2011 iMac, I needed to use the older file system. I also ran some speed tests with BMD disk speed test and it did well for a none-SSD (see attached photo). If you need an easy-to-use and portable drive, It is hard to beat WD.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had it for a month and haven't had any issues. This is my 2nd WD portable hard drive. Easy to set up, just plug in and go! I have the older one from years ago but it is pretty full with pictures, so I got another and it works great, quickly, and efficiently. No discs or anything confusing. Make your folders and drag and drop! It is not super light, feels nice!
This is the second WD My Passport I bought. The texture on the case is good-looking and comfortable to grasp. The actual capacity is 3.63 TB, which should be enough for long-term backup of my videos, docs, photos, etc. It is somewhat disappointing to find that I can't decrypt the drive on Android devices. Overall, the product is good and suitable for anyone with a limited budget and a massive data storage need.
For my newest build I tried to use nothing but SSDs, but for bulk storage old-fashioned hard disks are eighty percent cheaper than SSDs. After completing file transfers, my computer is just as fast as before, but I recovered fifty percent of my SSD storage by transferring seldom-used files to this slow, old-fashioned hard drive.
This is the second WD My Passport I bought a few months ago. The case is more comfortable to grasp (compared with the previous design), and the texture is good-looking.
This drive's quality is incontestable: it's capacious and substantial, and it reads and writes with satisfying speed. My only concern is that its connector is located well above its midline, and the included USB cord's plug flexes slightly when inserted. This is a bit disconcerting, and new to my experience; my slightly older and larger Passport has a tight, secure connector. Withal, this is a fine drive.
I'm a photographer, so I need additional backup for my images. This device backs up like I need it to, but when I open it, I cannot see the images. All I can see in the file is a jpeg icon. When I'm looking for an image, I need to be able to find it quickly. I don't have time to open every single icon to see if that's the image I'm looking for. Your older product that I had used to do this, however, your new software doesn't work like that. It also creates a separate link for every single day. Why? This is not necessary.
Only a couple weeks in so can't speak to it's reliability. It does function as a standard external hard drive. Data transfer does not seem as fast as other hard drives I have. I ordered 2 but only received 1. I had to call and I received a credit vs the second drive I wanted. I will try and assume it was not intentional to see if I would notice 1 missing from the order. My older passport external drives by WD had software to do automatic backups. This drive requires a subscription fee to use the software. So I am having to do the backups manually which is dissapointing.
Unfortunately this product failed on me within the first month I used it. My PC could no longer recognize the drive and I could not access my files. Ended up costing me a lot of money to get a professional data recovery done by a local shop, very disappointing.
