Very pleased with the support from WD. Did have a hard drive failure in my NAS device, sent the drive to WD under warranty and WD sent a new drive back.
I loaded up a bunch of competitor's 12TB drives in my Synology 1522+ NAS and used it for Apple Time Machine. At that time, I didn't understand that if I had a hot spare, I only needed to implement SHR and not SHR2 RAID, and I wasted an entire drive's worth of space. Fast forward and I found a cheap DX517 expansion module on an auction site, which I stocked with Western Digital 12TB WD Red drives. I stopped the SMB file services, moved the shared folder to the expansion module, re-formatted the base unit's drives, the moved them back. No errors and everything is now running again, letting me use the DX517 with the WD Red drives to hold my music and video libraries. Unlike the other brand of drives, the WD Red were verified and are running properly in a minimum of time with a minimum amount of fuss. Will buy again!
Just purchased in late July and working well! Hope to have years of service in a NAS environment.
The hard drive I received was dead on arrival. It spun up and seemed to be working fine, but it wasn't recognized by any device. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't an exchange process. I had to purchase a replacement and then return the original, which meant I was out a lot of money while waiting for the return to process. As for the drive itself, it's great. This is my 6th one so far, and I will continue to buy red/gold pros..
Really, the only (minor) complaint I have is these drives are a bit noisy. I have them in a NAS RAID 1 setup and they have performed flawlessly.
When connecting the Drive, it reads only 14.5 TB, So where the 1.5 TB missing. This is not right.
Very large drives! Ordered 4 total in 2 orders of 2. One order was great but the second they used SSD plastic holders flipped around backwards for the "packaging". The drives could shake around in the boxes! They tested ok with CrystalDiskInfo sector scan but leaves me concerned about longevity. WD has had a good RMA process in the past once but you always hope you don't have to do that.
I purchased 2 red 20TB hard drives but only 1 of them could be recognized and functioning correctly after I received them. Even I received a replacement later on, I am now worried, very worried about their lifespan.
I purchased four 20 TB hard drives. When I installed them, two out of the four had issues. One would not display a temperature reading on the SMART check and would not install. The other was working but a few hours after data was transferred to the drive, it started making loud clicking noises and failed the SMART check. I am currently in the middle of getting replacements, but I have to wait on shipping before I receive new drives. I am not confident about the reliability after 50% of the drives failed on the first day. Only time will tell, at least it has a 5 year warranty.
I purchased six of these drives to fill out a QNAP NAS extender. Four drives were sent in the first batch with two DOA. Got replacements which were not double packed when they were sent out of which one was failed. Trying to get those replaced. The other two drives I received had one faulty one so I'm working to get those replaced. Support was slow in addressing. I had to escalate a few times to get any action. The drives that do work I haven't had any problems. They are seem to be more silent than IronWolf Pros. Despite that I fear for my data. It was the price that attracted me to these drives. Foolish me.
