My husband and I constructed a wooden platform to fit over a metal 55 gallon drum to attach the mill and also to hold and stabilize a electric drill. I installed a bolt in the hand of the mill and attached it to my drill with a socket. I took an old hand held socket type screwdriver to hook to my drill in case of a jam it would spin in my drill and not break the mill. It only took me about 15 minutes to make this jig and it sits on top of my 55 gallon drum. I set my mill for the correct cracked corn size and then turned on my drill and locked it into the on position. I can now just add corn and do not have to hold the drill. Even if my drill should ever come loose it can't go anywhere or hurt anything. I took an old 5 gallon plastic bucket and cut a section out for a splatter shield. Worked excellent!!! You could also take a 5 gallon bucket and cut hole in bottom and affix it above hopper to feed into the hopper. This is an economical mill that cracks corn for chickens very well. I believe it would make good corn meal also if the corn is ran thru it a couple more times at smaller grinds. One thing though. I did let it cool off about every 10 minutes or so to prevent overheating so as not to damage it. It cools quickly so this wasn't a problem. I am able to crack 350 pounds of corn in about an hour. Very inexpensive, held up well, and worked great for my purposes.
Purchased for milling barley for homebrewing. A few washers in between the plate cover and removal of the inner adjustment retaining ring = a surprisingly good crush. The outer plate is only a tiny bit wobbly but it still produced a reasonably consistent crush. The casting/machining on all the mill parts is atrocious. Seriously the worst produced product I've ever seen. The hopper needed some bending with a hammer to fit. All things considered it did perform well despite this.
Upon opening I scrubbed it well in soapy water to get rid of the oil/petroleum smell...I'm assuming this was for rust prevention. I'm using this for grinding grain for homebrewing. I've removed the handle and attached a bolt so I can drive this with my drill. I've only used it for one batch and it went well. I needed to replace the existing washers that are used to hold the cover over the grinding element...the existing washers were too small. In addition, the ball bearing that pushes the rotating grind element against the stationary element needed to be "adjusted". There was a small washer/ring designed to keep the ball bearing but it didn't allow any adjustment. I removed this and now have to be careful when taking it apart so i don't lose the ball bearing.
I bought this for milling grain for home brewing. the choice was either get something like this or purchase something in the neighborhood of $200. I have to say that this mill works just fine, although there's a few minor changes I'd make if I was updating the model. it's a hand crank, and the crank works ok and mills the grain EXACTLY the way I want it to. for me speed is not a consideration if it compromises results. it's slow-- compared to attaching a variable speed drill to other more expensive models--but the results are adjustable and the mill is simple enough to understand and simple enough to adjust to get any desired result (for home brewers). I'm not milling fine flower, but for those who are -- I think if it is even possible to mill into a fine flower, it would take several pass-throughs and possible sifting at the end. this is an old fashioned mill, and the technology here is 150 to 200 years old at least. my suggested improvements? the metal plates that fit together have a few minor gaps in them, that allows for small amounts of milled grain to get out the back and some tiny amounts of unmilled grain remain wedged where the hopper attaches to the mill. if i was permanently mounting this somewhere, I'd drill a couple holes in the clamp and bolt it to something--but this is clearly a portable. these are minor / trivial observations, but for the very fussy people (and you know who you are) these little imperfections might really annoy you. for you folks I'd say spend ten times the money someplace else. but not me--I'm pleased with this purchase, and I'd recommend it.
This product may get better over time and use, but initially is not as efficient grinding grain (especially small ones like Flax, Chia, or Quinoa) to a meal consistancy. The metal grinding heads aren't able to be adjusted tight enough for those smaller grains. Also the upper bin has gaps where it connects to the lower grinding unit allowing smaller grains to leak out of it.
Machined parts are loose and don't fit together well. The metal shaved itself off just by cranking the handle with nothing in the mill. Upon closer inspection the mill looks like someone pieced it together in their garage. We're sending this back.
I bought this because the picture showed a cover over the burrs. Item that was sent had no such cover. It looks more like the cheaper models. It will work, but it's disappointing.
I would rate this a 5 if the clamp was better constructed. The clamp does not provide a secure fit on any surface in my home. If it had drill holes in the base I'd put screws in it but no holes just a rubber cover that adds to the instability of the grip. Oh yeah the rubber cover doesn't fit! It does grind well. I'm taking it back and buying a more expensive brand that has a stronger more secure clamp.
The screw that adjusted the grinding burrs/plates was not long enough to touch the burrs even at the most coarse level. Took it back for refund. This is an item you want to examine and put together before you even leave the store! If this had been in operable condition, I assume it would have performed well for required application.
Would not stay together, poor manufactoring. Had to wire it together to grind the meal. Took it back the next day for a refund. Do not waste your time and money on this product.
