The Alienware Alpha (i7) is a great little PC for those who are originally console gamers considering switching to PC gaming as well for those who want a good system with a small footprint (a little larger than the original Nintendo Wii). Initial set up only took an hour (w/ a wireless USB keyboard+trackpad combo to minimize set-up headaches) & was playing some of the smaller games from Steam library in a few minutes. While there were some "install pains" for some titles (forcing me to jump into desktop mode for initial set-up to download & install required components), they all play well on my HDTV @ 1080p. Newer games like GTA V will sit around the 30 fps mark with some of the settings increased from default, it's still "Good enough" for me to enjoy with minimal issue. Other games (that are less graphically intensive), I've generally left on default settings or increase them & fully enjoy them. To fully utilize the system, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a wireless keyboard + trackpad / mouse combo so you can everything else you can do in Desktop Mode (web browsing, media streaming, ect.). Playing Minecraft in full screen has never been more enjoyable, running smoothly at 60 fps (default settings, fancy graphics @ 1080p) with my friends. There are only two detractors I have to mention: Price & Non-Upgradable GPU. As with Alienware products, they do carry a bit of a premium for their stuff, but it's something I can see running for 5-10 years (possibly longer) with proper care... so budget accordingly. The non-upgradable GPU is biggest complaint as it's one component that will age the fastest by comparison in terms of gaming components, which will force you to buy a new system down the line (circa 2020 or so) to keep up with the newest & most graphic-intensive games. While it's not a 100% perfect solution to draw the hardcore console players, it's a great transitional system for those who are interested in switching to PC game without all the technical jargon or headaches with going with a full gaming PC. If you want a gaming system you want to take with you without all the weight or wires, definitely check this out (especially the higher-end configurations).
You will have to pry my cold dead hands from the controller..lol It blows everything out of the water today, console wise. Only thing better is a bigger a larger Alienware machine. I never thought PC gaming would make a come back or could compete with Nintendo Sony, or Microsoft. I have had my alpha top of the line for just over 3 months now and love playing it. the library of games are well over 5000 titles
I'm new to PC gaming and the Alienware Alpha was exactly what I was looking for.The graphics are sweet, better than the consoles in my opinion it's just overall a great system. If your a console gamer and you want try out pc gaming than this is the way to do it in a console like atmosphere. I havent felt this good about a game machine since Sega Dreamcast! Hats off alienware, I'm happy with this console/PC hybrid gaming masterpiece!
This is my first gaming computer. Been a long time console player, but really wanted something more diverse. This has definitely delivered. It handles graphics well, and even just on high settings, looks better than my PS4 (which I only use for Netflix and YouTube now). If you are a console gamer looking to make the transition, this is the choice for you. You can do so much more with it than a console, the performance is great, and the games are cheaper in general and have a lot more content, not to mention the games you can't find on console. My wife is not a gamer, but looking to get her one too just for the performance.
The Alienware Alpha console is a very good gaming PC. The console mode and features are not top notch but that doesn't matter because when the Steam OS releases for steam machines Alienware is going to allow you to change to the Steam OS instead. I use the Alpha nearly every day, I am a Hardcore gamer. The most Graphically intense game I probably played on it so far was Arma 3 and i can run it on High settings at an average of 40 FPS. The GPU is not updgradable but it is still a good GPU, I run most of my games on max settings. Overall the Alienware Alpha console is very good in my opinion. Could you get a better PC for the money you spend on the Alpha? Yes you could but your paying this for the Alpha's portability and just overall uniqueness.
Only thing I hate is the Kodi interface. It just never feels finished and just obsolete. You are better off just going to the desktop and running Razor Cortex for your games. When running Kodi and Steam Big Picture the games are very stuttery and huge fps drops. But on the desktop and using Cortex everything works perfectly with 60 fpa on just about everything on high and ultra graphics, very pleased. Kodi is a joke, just saying. Love the machine, far better than having just the Steam Machine with Big Picture. Very recommended. PS: I am not an avid gamer, but do play a lot. Intel i7 2tb.
I got the I7 Alpha and it was everything I expected, but.... the 2TB 5400rpm hard drive ruins the speed of this beautiful computer. I upgraded to a 1TB SSD and this thing rocks! about 6 seconds from off to log-in screen, faster than any of my other computers, and I have 10+ including other Alienware models. Note: the HDD would not clone from Sata to USB, once I put on another machine with 2 Sata connections it cloned fine. Note to Dell/Alienware if you are suppose to be the Elite Gaming division of Dell quit using mechanical hard drives...PERIOD!
The basic i5 setup was good, but needed faster hard drive. Ordered hybrid 1 GB drive from Dell and cloned OS from orig. HDD to new hybrid. This greatly improved both boot and performance, hence, the 5 star rating under performance. With OEM hard drive, I would have given 2-3 stars. I had many problems with the Alpha UI and use steam through desktop and that has worked well. All in all, with the tweeked hard drive, this holds its own with high demand games.
I've always been a console guy, since day one because I was able to game for a cheap price and be satisfied. This Alienware Alpha Console was the window to get my foot in the door for PC gaming and do I love it! I do not regret buying the i7 model one bit! Yeah it might not have the best graphics card, but most everything else can upgraded?! That's pretty exciting to know that it might not look the best be it can still run with the best. I would recommend this to anyone who was looking to get into PC gaming. After hearing a lot of things about Alienware being over priced, they surly delivered with this effective little machine. Thank you.
I have two of these for separate geographic locations. First off, I love this machine despite it's inherent flaws. Although there is only 2GB of video ram the customized GTX 980 is a powerhouse with most modern games. In both of my Alienware Alphas I have the core i7 upgrade, it's a cheap enough upgrade considering cost and longevity. I've upgraded both to be 16GB of aftermarket ram although 8GB is plenty for most people I didn't feel it was enough for what I'm running. I've upgraded both hard drives to SSHD 1TB drives, major performance increase as well as faster boot times. I currently have not found any game that run poorly and I'm playing modern titles like Star Wars Battlefront and Mortal Kombat X on max settings. All games that I play, whether it be in Steam, Origin, or UPlay on Windows 10 Pro are running excellently. What appealed to me the most on this model was the GPU. I've had a few Alienware machines over the years and they've suited me quite well with very few issues. Keeping in mind that the GPU is not upgradeable in this unit is a bit of a downfall but all things considered it should provide a couple of years of decent gaming before it slips to casual gaming for older titles. I would also like to point out that I build computers as a hobby/small business so I can tell you from first-hand knowledge you cannot build a computer with these specs for the prices that Dell is offering them for.
