Top Notch!

Pretty straight forward, not complicated to use at all. Does exactly what is says it will do. I make foam airplanes and it comes in real handy for making nice 45 degree angled cuts in 6mm sheets or smaller foam. Would be nice to be able to get longer blades or if this would come in a larger size in general for thicker sheets of foam that I regularly work with. All in all though it works great and is well worth it's very cheap price.

Great for foam board RC airplanes

I've recently got into the hobby of RC airplanes and helicopters and decided to scratch build a Flite Test FT Flyer from their free plans. When I initially tried cutting the board w/ an X-Acto knife or utility knife, it was difficult for me to get nice square cuts. This device, when used w/ a straight edge makes beautiful cuts after you get the depth adjusted properly. It's suggested you do your cutting on top of another piece of foam board, but I use corrugated cardboard instead. I've read complaints about blades dulling quickly, but using cardboard & adjusting the blade so it's just a 1/32" or so deeper than the board thickness allowed me to cut out a complete plane & it cut as nicely at the end as it did initially. Replacement blades are readily available at Pat Catan's & very inexpensive. I was a little disappointed that the dual-blade set-up doesn't cut the proper width for leaving the paper on the board which is critical for airplane strength. A set of shims that equal the thickness of the (2) paper layers would probably fix that. For control surfaces' hinges, a 45 degrees cut isrequired on the movable surface & this cutter does a great job. The price is amazing - a bargain in my opinion.

This foam cutter works very well but keep the blade sharp! I would sharpen blade on wooden stick as new blades are very expensive.

Once you get the hang of it, it's a great tool for cutting angles in the foam for my Pepakura projects. The price is great! Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's not as easy to find the replacement blades for it.

Clear directions for use. Easy to adjust, but should be only done by an adult.

Xacto foamboard cutter not good enough.

I am glad that I paid an extremely bargain price for this cutter. It is not worth full price at all. The problem is the plastic piece on the bottom of the cutter that determines what angle you cut at. It is flimsy and does not fit onto the cutter firmly. When that piece is placed at the 45 degree angle, it fits more firmly and by being careful decent cuts can be made. But at the 90 degree angle, the cutter wiggles back and forth and is not stable at all. Smooth, vertical cuts are extraordinarily difficult to do with this angle piece. It amazes me to think that Xacto makes such a poor piece of equipment (the angle piece) and people actually pay full price for it! If X-acto redesigns the angle piece, the cutter would probably be very useful. The blade cuts well and the device is easy and comfortable to hold. Making small cuts (without the angle piece installed) that do not need exact alignment works pretty well. As it is, I am going to try to glue a piece onto the cutter so the vertical alignment is precise and the cutter does not shimmy or wobble or change angle depending on how the cutter is held. I bought this specifically to do vertical cuts in foam. I was disappointed in the cheap construction of the angle piece. The cutter itself seems to be well made.

A very "qualified recommendation"

Product reviews were principally for cutting on foam board, but based on product label and description, I bought it to cut art mat board. For straight cuts, vs. 45 degree, it is probably a very adequate tool used with a non-slip straight edge. The 45 degree attachment seems nearly impossible to maintain at the correct angle (on mat board), even while using a straight edge as a guide, and the cut must begin at the outer edge of the board because of tool design--i.e., starting the cut in the middle so as to make a mat for a piece of artwork is not very doable. I am a very small person, but the handle seems a tad undersized for good control; however, it has a nice non-slip surface. In summary, I would not recommend it for cutting art mats, but it's a nice, sharp, safe, easy-to-use, utility-knife-like tool.

Looks good, but hard to use

I thought it would make angle cuts easier, but it makes it harder. The device should be made of metal. It makes a marked groove on the foam board away from the actual cut. It is easier to just hold a blade at an angle up against a metal ruler, to make an angled cut.

Junk

Although I was thrilled with Walmart's price and delivery service (it cost me barely $5.00 to buy and have delivered a product that retails for nearly $20 in many places locally), I found the tool barely lived up to its description let alone my expectations. The body is cheap plastic and the blade is difficult to adjust, and the attachment that's supposed to help cut the angle or bevel is frustratingly unable to lie flat. Most importantly, whether using a straightedge or T-square, I was unable to score, let alone cut, anything resembling a straight line -- regardless of the angle. Put your money towards a high-grade mat cutter and save yourself lots of aggravation.
