This Sixth Edition of the best-selling A FIRST COURSE IN DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH MODELING APPLICATIONS, places a greater emphasis on modeling and using technology in problem solving, and now features more applications. The last edition of this text became university professors' top choice for teaching differential equations, in part because the author piques students' interest with special features and in-text aids. Pre-publication reviewers of this edition again praise the author's accessible writing style and the text's organization which makes it easy to teach from and easy for students to understand and use. Understandable, step-by-step solutions are provided for every example. And this edition makes an even greater effort to show students how the mathematical concepts have relevant, everyday applications.

The development of a theory of optimal control (deterministic) requires the following initial data: (i) a control u belonging to some set ilIi ad (the set of 'admissible controls') which is at our disposition, (ii) for a given control u, the state y(u) of the system which is to be controlled is given by the solution of an equation (*) Ay(u)=given function ofu where A is an operator (assumed known) which specifies the system to be controlled (A is the 'model' of the system), (iii) the observation z(u) which is a function of y(u) (assumed to be known exactly; we consider only deterministic problems in this book), (iv) the "cost function" J(u) ("economic function") which is defined in terms of a numerical function z-+

Lomen/Lovelock present differential equations as a natural extension of calculus, and encourage students to see them as a natural tool for investigating many aspects of science and engineering. The book provides lively reading with compelling applications, projects and experiments that supply students with opportunities to explore the differential equation and the process it models. Lomen/Lovelock suggest throughout the text that students employ technology as an instrument to check, discover and interpret the behavior of solutions. Appropriate for Sophmore courses in Junior Colleges, State Schools and Universities.

This book provides a clear summary of the work of the author on the construction of nonstandard finite difference schemes for the numerical integration of differential equations. The major thrust of the book is to show that discrete models of differential equations exist such that the elementary types of numerical instabilities do not occur. A consequence of this result is that in general bigger step-sizes can often be used in actual calculations and/or finite difference schemes can be constructed that are conditionally stable in many instances whereas in using standard techniques no such schemes exist. The theoretical basis of this work is centered on the concepts of ?exact? and ?best? finite difference schemes. In addition, a set of rules is given for the discrete modeling of derivatives and nonlinear expressions that occur in differential equations. These rules often lead to a unique nonstandard finite difference model for a given differential equation.

Encouraging the student to experiment and explore in order to understand the concepts of ordinary differential equations, this text explains how to determine properties of a solution directly from the differential equation. Wherever possible, concepts are explored graphically, algebraically, numerically, and descriptively. The authors assume that the user has access to mathematical software that draws slope fields, generates numerical solutions, and allows data and graphs of functions to be displayed simultaneously.

Solitons: An Introduction discusses the theory of solitons and its diverse applications to nonlinear systems that arise in the physical sciences. Drazin and Johnson explain the generation and properties of solitons, introducing the mathematical technique known as the Inverse Scattering Tranform. Their aim is to present the essence of inverse scattering clearly, rather than rigorously or completely. Thus, the prerequisites are merely what is found in standard courses on mathematical physics and more advanced material is explained in the text with useful references to further reading given at the end of each chapter. Worked examples are frequently used to help the reader follow the various ideas and the exercises at the end of each chapter not only contain applications but also test understanding. Answers, or hints to their solution, are given at the end of the book. Sections and exercises that contain more difficult material are indicated by asterisks.
