This book was originally published in 1965. Dr Maxwell relates the ideas being introduced into the teaching of elementary university and advanced school algebra to the topics and methods with which teachers and students are already familiar and which are treated in the author's Advanced Algebra, Part I. Dr Maxwell shows the student meeting modern algebra for the first time what it is all about and leads those who will be taking the subject further to a firm grasp of the details that will come later in their course. From a discussion of algebraic systems with a single operation, he introduces the idea of a group and goes on to survey other algebraic structures: vector spaces, fields and rings. The second section is on linear algebra, mainly in terms of matrices and the solution of linear equations. A final section introduces the reader to more advanced concepts, including eigenvectors and eigenvalues and their use for quadratic forms. There is a large number of examples, with answers.

Our Score
Contains a more substantial discussion on reliability, fuller development of Lanczos method for sparse eigenvalue programs and the related conjugate gradient method for sparse linear equations, a detailed examination of techniques involving sparse matrices, as well as a chapter on the solution of non-linear equations. All the program segments have been set in structured FORTRAN and special considerations required for working with vector and parallel computers are introduced. Features several exercises at the end of each chapter.

CONDITION - USED - Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include "From the library of" labels or previous owner inscriptions. Accessories such as CD, codes, toys, may not be included. This course, generally called Linear Algebra, is usually taught in mathematics departments as a service course for engineers. While there is no real prerequisite other than algebra, students will need a calculus of differential equations background to appreciate this course.

CONDITION - USED - Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include "From the library of" labels or previous owner inscriptions. Accessories such as CD, codes, toys, may not be included. Exceptionally useful text focuses on the establishment of the well-known canonical forms. Rank, nonsingularity and inverses are introduced in connection with the development of canonical matrices under the relation of equivalence, and without the intervention of determinants. Matrix Computations, Used [Paperback]
Our Score
This book provides practical approaches to the efficient use of sparsity--a key to solving large problems in many fields, including computational science and engineering, where mathematical models give rise to very large systems of linear equations. The emphasis is on practicality, with conclusions based on concrete experience. Non-numeric computing techniques have been included as well as frequent illustrations in an attempt to bridge the gap between the written word and the working computer code. Exercises have been included to strengthen understanding of the material as well as to extend it for students and researchers in engineering, mathematics, and computer science.
