Perhaps Phil's greatest record, from 1967. Includes, 'CrossMy Heart', 'Flower Lady' & 'The Crucifixion'. Complete withoriginal artwork and new liner notes. First time on CD. Standard jewelcase. 2000 release.
Personnel includes: Phil Ochs (vocals); Ian Freebairn-Smith, Joseph Byrd (arranger); Lincoln Mayorga (piano). Recorded in August 1967. Originally released on A&M Records. Includes liner notes by Richie Unterberger. On his first album for a pop label, 1967's PLEASURES OF THE HARBOR, Phil Ochs lets go of the voice-and-guitar format of his Elektra albums, recording with a bevy of Los Angeles studio musicians under the direction of producer Larry Marks and arranger Ian Freebairn-Smith to make an album with the same fractured middle-of-the-road sound as Love's FOREVER CHANGES or Judy Collins' WILDFLOWERS. Adorned with strings and horns alongside standard rock instrumentation, the songs are considerably more oblique than Ochs' previous broadside ballads. This is not to say that Ochs abandoned politics: inspired by the murder of Kitty Genovese, the sarcastic music-hall piano rag "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends" is a sneering criticism of apathy, and "The Crucifixion" appears to be a parable of the life of JFK. The meat of the album, however, lies in more personal songs like "Flower Lady" and the bitter, baroquely orchestrated "I've Had Her."

'Harvey Milk' is one of several late 20th-century operas to deal with figures from (comparatively) recent headlines. We see Harvey Milk's journey from a teenager in the standing room at the old Met, through his career as a closeted executive to the "Mayor of Castro Street," to becoming the first openly gay man elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors. The final, immensely powerful image of the opera portrays the young Harvey, still in the handcuffs from his arrest by an undercover cop he meets at the Met, watching the outpouring of love occasioned by his assassination and finally being released by his jailer. The work, a joint commission of three opera companies, was recorded after the final revisions for the San Francisco performances. The libretto uses a number of strategies to tell Milk's story, from the symbolic closet Harvey lives in during the brilliant first act to a fairly straightforward realism for the scenes in San Francisco. The music covers a range from Broadway to the clusters of the avant garde as appropriate to the dramatic situation. The large cast performs with great dedication and the forces of the San Francisco Opera make another valuable contribution to recorded opera.

Full performer name: Mohaammad Reza Shajarian/Hossein Alizadeh/Kayhan Kalhor/Homayoun Shajarian. Personnel: Mohaammad Reza Shajarian (vocals); Hossein Alizadeh (tar); Kayhan Kalhor (fiddle); Homyayoun Shajarian (vocals, percussion). Producers: Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Hossein Alizadeh, Kayhan Kalhor, Homayoun Sharjarian. Includes liner notes by Laudan Nooshin. WITHOUT YOU was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album. This outstanding album is alive with electric energy. Featuring classical Persian music played with lute, spike fiddle, and drum, this phenomenal set of musicians (all descended from a long line of music masters) is exceptional in terms of the Iranian classical scene. The album (recorded live) consists of haunting solo instrumentation colored with the piercing cries Mohaammad Reza Shajarian's operatic voice. Equally important is the use of the spaces in between the notes, which lend a conversational tone to the interplay between the various musical elements. Shajarian's supple vocals sound at times like they cannot be of this world. For example, In "Saz Va Avaz," his voice morphs into something that sounds mechanical, as if it was run through a synthesizer. The improvisational aspects of this performance and the virtuostic command of the instruments make it fresh and mind-expanding from start to finish.
