Stephen Makin presents a clear and accurate new translation of an influential and much-discussed part of Aristotle's philosophical system, accompanied by an analytical and critical commentary focusing on philosophical issues. In Book Theta of the Metaphysics Aristotle introduces the concepts of actuality and potentiality--which were to remain central to philosophical analysis into the modern era--and explores the distinction between the actual and the potential.

Martin Heidegger's Introduction to Metaphysics, first published in 1953, is a highly significant work by a towering figure in twentieth-century philosophy. The volume is known for its incisive analysis of the Western understanding of Being, its original interpretations of Greek philosophy and poetry, and its vehement political statements. This new companion to the Introduction to Metaphysics presents an overview of Heidegger's text and a variety of perspectives on its interpretation from more than a dozen highly respected contributors. In the editors' introduction to the book, Richard Polt and Gregory Fried alert readers to the important themes and problems of Introduction to Metaphysics. The contributors then offer original essays on three broad topics: the question of Being, Heidegger and the Greeks, and politics and ethics. Both for readers who are approaching Heidegger for the first time and for those who are studying Heidegger on an advanced level, this Companion offers a clear guide to one of the philosopher's most difficult yet most influential writings.

Perhaps you are standing in a bookstore thumbing through the pages of this little book, wondering if it contains the insights you are looking for. Perhaps you are wondering who the Ascended Master Djwhal Khul is and whether he really exists or ever did exist. Ultimately, it does not matter who the source is, but whether the contents are enlightening and useful to you and whether, after reading this book, you can understand more metaphysical and significance of the present time in Earth history. My perspective is that of one who has been a Tibetan Buddhist monk who eventually presided over a monastery. In that life, I focused on mediation, contemplation, study and simple chores, as well as training and teaching younger monks. The life culminated many others spent in the monasteries of the Orient and in more mundane activities. The contemplative life makes it possible to raise consciousness to higher levels, and it is a testing ground to see how well one has learned the principles one has studied. The goals of my Tibetan incarnation were to attain my true Buddha nature, demonstrate my compassion for all sentient beings, break free of the bonds of reincarnation and join the noble ones. Thus I am giving you this book as one who has attained these goals and who now dwells in what might be considered a different dimension. Or I might be referred to as a mind without a body! At the time when I transcended to a higher level, I gained insights into a greater realm of knowledge and wisdom than had been available to me as a man incarnated on Earth. So I am not writing from the perspective of a Buddhist, but from that of one of the Spiritual Hierarchy, who guides the life on this planet. -- Djwhal Khul

The Metaphysics of Gender is a book about gender essentialism: What it is and why it might be true. It opens with the question: What is gender essentialism? The first chapter distinguishes between essentialism about kinds of individuals (e.g. women and men as groups) and essentialism about individuals (e.g. you and me). Successive chapters introduce the ingredients for a theory of gender essentialism about individuals, called uniessentialism . Gender uniessentialism claims that a social individual's gender is uniessential to that individual. It is modeled on Aristotle's essentialism in which the form or essence of an individual is the principle of unity of that individual. For example, the form or essence of an artifact, like a house, is what unifies the material parts of the house into a new individual (over and above a sum of parts). Since an individual's gender is a social role (or set of social norms), the kind of unity in question is not the unity of material parts, as it is in the artifact example. Instead, the central claim of gender uniessentialism is that an individual's gender provides that individual with a principle of normative unity-a principle that orders and organizes all of that individual's other social roles. An important ingredient in gender uniessentialism concerns exactly which individuals are at issue-human organisms, persons, or social individuals? The Metaphysics of Gender argues that a social individual's gender is uniessential to it. Gender uniessentialism expresses the centrality of gender in our lived experiences and explores the social normativity of gender in a way that is useful for feminist theory and politics.

The central axis of The Stop is the secret turn of awareness by which we pass from ignorance to knowledge. The stop, then, is the spark of initiation, intense enough to arouse consciousness from its slumber and to motivate the difficult journey to a higher understanding. To stop is to begin a movement toward consciousness.

This argues that death can be a creative experience rather than something to be feared. It discusses the psychological need for grieving and suggests how the bereaved might be more aware of their own needs as well as those of their loved one, and insists that how we live is crucial to how we die.
