The Enterprise returns to Nervala IV to retrieve data left behind by researchers who were forced to evacuate the planet eight years ago. Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes), who led the evacuation as a lieutenant on the U.S.S. Potemkin, is shocked to find his exact duplicate alone on the station. Geordi (LeVar Burton) learns of an anomaly in the planet's distortion field which explains the transporter phenomenon that caused Riker's dual existence. Now, Lieutenant Riker wants to pick up where he left off -- in the middle of a romance with Troi (Marina Sirtis), but learns that Commander Riker's behavior in the past has forever altered his future. Of course, there's always time for a second chance at life and love. Guest starring Dr. Mae Jemison, the first real-life space traveler to appear in a Star Trek episode, as Ensign Palmer.

En route to the Enterprise in a runabout, Picard (Patrick Stewart), Troi (Marina Sirtis), Geordi (LeVar Burton) and Data (Brent Spiner) encounter a temporal disturbance which causes each of them to experience distortions in the passage of time. Eventually they come upon the Enterprise and find it frozen in time, apparently locked in battle with a Romulan Warbird, moments from the brink of destruction. Further investigation reveals that a warp core explosion is occurring on board the Enterprise at an infinitesimal rate that will destroy the ship in a matter of hours. Somehow Picard and the crew must figure out a way to stop it before it's too late!.

Responding to a distress call from Ohniaka III, the Enterprise confronts an ominous-looking alien vessel orbiting the planet. When efforts to communicate with the ship prove fruitless, an Away Team transports to the surface where they discover a group of Borg who are both hostile and self-aware. A battle ensues during which Data (Brent Spiner) experiences his first emotion, rage. Fearing an invasion, the Federation prepares for an all-out attack. Meanwhile, one of the Borg is captured and establishes a peculiar bond with Data, ultimately convincing him that feeling emotion is worth any price. When the two escape on a shuttlecraft, the crew tracks them to an unexplored planet -- and the descent into darkness begins.

On the eve of Bashir's (Siddig El Fadil) 30th birthday, a Lethean named Altovar (Victor Rivers) attempts to buy restricted medical supplies from him. Bashir refuses, but later returns to the infirmary only to find the Lethean raiding his supply cabinet. During a violent struggle, Bashir is knocked unconscious. He awakens to find the station deserted and just the most vital systems still functioning. What few members of the crew who can be found are acting wildly out of character. As Bashir begins aging rapidly, distant voices in his mind reveal that he is in a telepathically induced coma and will die in less than three hours unless he can find a way to escape!.

During a visit to Bajor, Sisko (Avery Brooks) finds the plans for an ancient Bajoran space vessel that operates like a sailboat, using solar pressure for propulsion. According to legend, the Bajorans used these ships to explore the star system over 800 years ago, even going as far as Cardassia. Hoping to recreate the journey, Sisko decides to build one for himself and invites his son, Jake (Cirroc Lofton), to join him. Ignoring Gul Dukat's (Marc Alaimo) warnings that the journey is too hazardous, the two prepare to depart the station. Despite the odds, they're determined to follow the trail that was blazed centuries earlier, but even they don't know what surprises lie ahead.

Quark (Armin Shimerman) is excited to receive a shuttle his cousin Gaila has owed him for 10 years, and decides to use it to fly Nog (Aron Eisenberg) to Starfleet Academy on Earth. With Rom (Max Grodenchik) at the controls, they set off for Earth. But as the shuttle enters Earth's system, the ship, which has been sabotaged, malfunctions and the three Ferengis and a stowaway end up going through a time warp to Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. There, the military mistakes them for Martians and imprisons them. Rather than searching for a way home, Quark smells profits and, believing he can manipulate these primitive humans, plans to stay and take over the planet!.

Neelix is confronted by Haakonian scientist Ma'bor Jetrel, the man responsible for creating the Metreon Cascade, a device that was used to annihilate a major portion of the Talaxian race, including Neelix's family. Janeway understands Neelix's bitterness but allows Jetrel aboard when he explains that he's searching for victims of metremia, a late-developing disease caused by exposure to metreon radiation. Tempers flare between the two, with Neelix constantly distrusting the man who murdered his family. Ultimately, he discovers Jetrel's true motive for being on board the ship - but it might be too late!.

The shields are at a maximum, the drive is at warp 3...yet the Voyager lies helpless in the grasp of a powerful distortion wave. As officers scramble to solve the emergency, they discover something else: the enveloping force is changing the ships layout. As a result, Janeway can't find her way to the bridge, Torres can't locate engineering and Doc can't reach the holodeck- all of which complicates the response to the crisis. Tuvok assesses the situation and reaches an unflinching conclusion: in 68 minutes, the ship will be crushed. Unwilling to go down without a fight, the crew attempts countermeasures and finds that their efforts only worsen their plight. They've tried all that's reasonable. Now, as Tuvok suggests, it's time to try something others might consider unreasonable.
