Outsourcing is as controversial as ever in today's globalized world. But for all the noise about it in the media, whether reflecting the perspectives of labor, business, consultants, academics, employees, or protestors, there is far more emotion surrounding the benefits and drawbacks of the trend than there is common sense. Not only are these messages from different constituents polarizing, they are also confusing because they muddy the waters regarding corporate performance. Buffington clarifies the role of outsourcing in business today so that Americans can focus on something that really matters--real increases in productivity and competitiveness in a global economy. In most cases, he contends, neither outsourcing nor its close cousin, offshoring, are effective as a means to their intended end. Moreover, he points out, Americans focus a lot of negative energy on offshoring, not realizing that domestic outsourcing might be more harmful to our economy in the long run. Corporations lack awareness of this distinction, according to Buffington, and therefore they don't know which should be implemented in what circumstances. That ignorance is not only an obstacle for any company seeking to implement a successful outsourcing strategy, but it is also a dire threat to the long-term growth of the American economy. Buffington demonstrates that outsourcing often functions as an easy out for corporations that are reluctant to look instead at the root causes of their problems, whether low productivity, lack of innovation, or an unwillingness to invest in marketing, promotion, and sales. The reason that corporations aren't focusing on these core issues has a historical element as much as an evolutionary one within a global economy; the divisions today between workers and management are as sharp as they were back in the early 20th century, Buffington argues. But as much as we have to learn from the past about the impact of worker/management relations on worker productivity, we have even more to learn about all aspects of the productivity puzzle. Corporate productivity, or lack thereof, drives the success or failure of outsourcing or offshoring more than the act itself, according to Buffington. This book challenges business leaders to find their productivity and only then to make outsourcing decisions. This approach will work for corporations, consulting firms, outsourcers, and in the end, customers themselves. A more productive, worker-manager friendly business environment will lead to greater U.S. productivity, and therefore, more effective outsourcing/offshoring decisions.

CONDITION - USED - Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include "From the library of" labels or previous owner inscriptions. Accessories such as CD, codes, toys, may not be included. Something radical is happening to corporate organizational structures, something subtle yet far-reaching in impact. It is the rapid emergence of offshore outsourcing as a corporate strategy. Cost reduction, productivity improvement, and cheaper labor - these are the promises of offshore outsourcing. This book reveals how GE, American Express, Dell, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, BellSouth, British Telecom, and numerous other companies are successfully using offshore outsourcing to reduce costs associated with IT, customer care, finance and accounting, human resources, and transaction processing. Offshore Outsourcing: Business Models, ROI, and Best Practices is a comprehensive guide to the real-world application of offshore outsourcing across all industries. Authors Marcia Robinson and Dr. Ravi Kalakota give you an in-depth analysis of offshore outsourcing. They discuss what is behind this trend, how it is paying off, and, most importantly, provide you with a step-by-step guide on how you can implement your own offshore strategy. Based on extensive research and interviews, this book offers insight into how managers of leading firms are implementing offshore outsourcing. You will find plenty of practical tips and tools to apply offshore outsourcing in a wide variety of business environments. Offshore Outsourcing is organized in three easy-to-read sections: Part One introduces the value proposition of offshore outsourcing, including fundamental concepts, the different business models, and the business process landscape. Part Two examines the specifics of the processes being offshored today, namely information technology, customer care, finance and accounting, human resources, and transaction processing. Part Three describes the major activities of the offshore strategy, vendor sourcing, and country selection. Robinson and Kalakota include multiple best-practice case studies to illustrate how firms are executing their offshore strategies. The authors map out key steps to help you make the right choices with your own offshore projects and reveal the benefits, costs, and risks of offshore outsourcing. Finally, it?s your choice. Offshore outsourcing can be a haphazard affair that creates anxiety among employees and fails to deliver bottom-line results. Or, with this book at your side, it can help you create a more focused, streamlined, and competitive organization.

Reliance on the private military industry and the privatization of public functions has left our government less able to govern effectively. When decisions that should have been taken by government officials are delegated (wholly or in part) to private contractors without appropriate oversight, the public interest is jeopardized. Books on private military have described the problem well, but they have not offered prescriptions or solutions this book does.

This requires people to make contracts so that they know the basis on which they are working with each other and to deal with any disagreements that subsequently arise. So a knowledge of contracting specifically for project management is essential if a project is to avoid difficulties and reach a successful conclusion. This book concentrates specifically on the contracting issues that surround projects of any size.
